So like with Disney's other animated films of the 90s and early 00s, Atlantis: The Lost Empire (one of my all time favourite films by the way) was set out to get direct to DVD sequels, an attraction at Disney theme parks and its own TV series. Unfortunately all those plans were scrapped when the film's total box office gross wasn't what Disney were expecting so instead of all that, we instead get one direct to DVD sequel which is a film that contains 3 short stories that were intended to be part of the TV series with parts of the animation made to make the stories connect with each other. So let's see if this was the right thing to do:
So following from the predecessor, Milo and Kida (voiced by James Arnold Taylor and Cree Summer respectively, the latter of which also did the role in the predecessor) are living happily in Atlantis where Kida is now Queen and is doing all she can to get Atlantis to return to its former glory. One day, Milo's comrades and Mr. Whitmore (who funded the expedition in the predecessor, reprised by John Mahoney) return and while their visit was unexpected, they are welcomed into Atlantis. Unfortunately and as most of us can predict, they are not here for a reunion as things are happening on the surface which means that Whitmore needs Milo's knowledge of Atlantis to help him and the others with the stuff happening on the surface and Kida comes along with them.
Now some of Disney's direct to DVD sequels have often followed a trend where the sequel would have 3 short stories and the film would try to somehow connect them all together for anything to make sense and does this film do that? Well, in a way, it does. Much like with some of Disney's lesser known films (which is mostly these direct to DVD films), some of it isn't that impressive like it was in The Lost Empire and I think this film was made purely down to the fact that despite the film not doing so well, it had a fanbase which in turn, made it a cult classic and as you know, I'm a sucker for those films because despite those films not doing so well, they are good in a way which is the important thing. Still, not the best sequel I've seen, but certainly not the worst either. 6/10
