Movie Series Review: Spoof Movies by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer

If there is anything that I hate more than most big budget films, it's these lower budget spoof films. Now don't get me wrong, not all of these films are bad. For the most part, they are just enjoyably bad with some being more werider and stupid than the others. But they are overall bad and here's why:

Date Movie
As the title suggests, this is a spoof of the many romantic films out there (notably the Meet the Fockers series, the 2 Bridget Jones films, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and even some non romantic films like the Lord of the Rings series and the 2 Kill Bill films). Julia Jones is an obese woman whose ultimate goal is to find love. Following the films it spoofs, she makes every attempt to get a guy and fails for the most part. I won't go any further than that, because I'm sure you all know where it goes and how it ends. Overall, this was an enjoyably bad film. It throws in all the factors that you would expect in a romantic comedy and well that's it. Just another romantic spoof, pretty much. 6/10

Epic Movie
Epic Movie is a spoof film that spoofs the more recent big budget films (such as the Pirates of the Caribbean series, the Narnia series, Superman Returns, the Harry Potter series and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).  4 orphans simultaneously in different areas of the world, come across a golden ticket to Willy's Factory, which they see as a ticket out of their bad lives (Lucy having to protect her adopted father from enemies in a spoof of the Da Vinci Code, Edward having to put up with some children and a wrestler in an orphanage in a spoof of Nacho Libre, Susan having to fend for herself in a parody of Snakes in a Plane while also referencing the Brangelina showbiz news and Peter having to attend a mutant school because of his chicken wings in a spoof of the X-Men films, respectively . Upon arrival, they become Willy's test subjects for his candy until Lucy enters a wardrobe that leads her (and later the others) to a land called Gnarnia (and then for the rest of the film, it spoofs the first Narnia film with minor spoofs of other films). Overall, I just felt sick in the first few minutes of the film (especially the Willy scene) and ultimately did not enjoy the film as much as Date Movie. It was just bad throughout. 6/10

Meet The Spartans
Meet the Spartans is basically a spoof of the film 300. I won't go into too much detail about the plot as it's near identical to the film it's spoofing, only with references and spoofs of other films as well as TV shows, celebrities and pop cultural events. Do I like it? Well yes I do. However I only like it, just for how bad it truly is. It does a great job of parodying 300 and throws in a number of spoofs and references to other films as well as the stuff I mentioned above. It all works well, but it may be too much for a single person to sit through. That's why it's bad. 7/10

Disaster Movie
Disaster Movie is much like Epic Movie in that it spoofs more big budget films (such as Hellboy, The Incredible Hulk, The Dark Knight, Kung Fu Panda and even Sex and the City), the only difference here, is that it has an original ish) story that for the most part, is just all about disastrous weather. In the year 10,001 BC, a caveman comes across a sabre tooth Amy Winehouse who warns him that the world will end on the film's release date, August 29th 2008 unless his future self finds a crystal skull. We then go to the present day where Will (the futuristic version of the caveman) finds out that his girlfriend is having an affair with Flavor Flav and breaks up with him. Later that day, he has a "Super Sweet 16" party (despite being 25 at the time) which after a lot of partying (with spoofs of Superbad, High School Musical and Wanted) then causes the room to shake and the news spreads that a meteor shower is ocouring and will see the end of the world. Its up to Will and his friends to stop it from happening (and you can guess the rest of the story from there). It's all over the place and messed up. For most of the time, you don't know what's going on and from my point of view, it could've been better. 6/10

Vampires Suck
Vampires Suck is a spoof of the Twilight films which from my point of view, is also the only film in this series to have very limited spoofs of anything other than Twilight. As with Meet the Spartans, I won't go into too much detail as it's story is near identical to the first few Twilight films. Overall, while it is enjoyably bad, it shows all the mistakes and all the critisim that the Twilight films get and I give this film credit for doing that. So if anyone is interested of the many things that make Twilight suck, this would be the film for the job. Otherwise, this is an enjoyably bad film throughout. 7/10

Overall, it's not the greatest series of films that I have seen and it's definitely not the worst. It mostly shows people a comedic take on all these big budget films crammed into one, hour and a half film which doesn't always work well. From my point of view, the films that spoof one film while referencing others, tends to work better than just a lot of films crammed into one big messed up film. But I do say check these films out because they are enjoyable to watch, if not bad (if that makes sense). 7/10

Movie Review - Inside Out 2

I guess a sequel to the first makes sense here. I mean, for the most part, this franchise is all about the subject of growing up and with ...
