Random Movie Review - Home on the Range

Of all the Disney animated features that we've had over the years, this one has been considered by many to be the worst. As you all know, most of Disney's films are based on numerous things of fiction like certain mythologies (Hercules, Atlantis: The Lost Empire etc.), fairy tales (most of them) and even some legends. Among all these, Disney wanted a film to be based on The Pied Piper, but as everyone knows, that wouldn't work as the story involved some things that a Disney film would not allow (for the most part anyway). So there was then this idea of maybe having a film that follows the story loosely, but not exactly and then came the idea of a western and farm theme and a few other ideas were thrown in and thus we get this film. A film that caused Disney to stop making hand drawn films for 5 years just by how bad it was and that it was a dark time for Disney anyway (as shown in its films during those 5 years). So let's look at what many have called, the worst ever Disney animated film from its long line of animated classics:

So we meet Maggie (voiced by Roseanne Barr) who is the only cow left on the Dixie Ranch following an expert rustler who stole all the other cattle. She is sold to an elderly but kind woman called Pearl (voiced by Carole Cook) who runs a small farm called Patch of Heaven. Some financial problems arise with the farm and when the bounty of a criminal is exactly what's needed to save the farm, Maggie teams up with Mrs. Galloway (voiced by former M, Dame Judi Dench) and Grace (voiced by Jennifer Tilly), both of which are cows on the same farm as Maggie, to find and capture the criminal and save the farm.

Now I think the reason why this film was the last hand drawn Disney film before its 5 year hiatus is not down to the film alone. Its down to the fact that Disney were going through a rough time with some of its key members and other things going on as well. So I think this film reflects on all that was happening in Disney at the time. It's on everyone's list of the worst Disney films ever and I personally just thought it was OK. Its not the best Disney film, but I can understand why so many people hate it. 7/10
