Random Movie Review - Corpse Bride

So when I was sorting out these reviews for October, I thought I should look at least at one Tim Burton film because a lot of us know that some of Tim Burton's work is in the horror genre or at the very least, has some horror elements in his films. And for the most part, his stop-motion films and films based on original concepts by him, tend to do well both critically and commercially, but not so well for his adaptations and remakes. That's not to say that he does bad adaptations and remakes because he doesn't. He just has a very dark and unusual take on them which in my opinion is fine. So with that said, let's take a look at this film:

Should mention that while this film is put in the fantasy genre, it has elements in it that make it a Halloween themed film so yeah.

So in an unknown European village in the Victorian era, we meet a couple who are about to be married. The groom is Victor Van Dort (voiced by Burton collaborator number 1, Johnny Depp) who is the son of nouveau fish merchants and the bride is Victoria Everglot (voiced by an actress not to be confused with the one who plays Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, Emily Watson) who is the neglected daughter of hateful aristocrats. Apparently, this marriage is to give both families good fortune in some way and while they were both uncomfortable with marrying someone they both don't know, upon meeting, they instantly fell in love. Victor chooses to leave the wedding rehearsal to practice the vows in a nearby forest, in which he uses the ring on a tree's root. However, this root turns out to be the finger of a dead and murdered girl in a tattered bride gown who is risen from the grave claiming to be Victor's wife and is whisked away to the Land of the Dead where he learns the story of this girl who is called Emily (played by Burton collaborator number 2, Helena Bonham Carter). With all this happening, Victor must now choose to be with this undead girl, or the girl that if married to, will bring good fortune to their families.

I think that despite this film having everything that makes a Burton film with the appearances of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as well as Danny Elfman doing the music, this is one of the few films with those 3 reoccurring collaborators that is actually very good. Its dark, weird and its pretty much Tim Burton doing what he does best and what many think is his strongest film making skill, stop motion. Might not be scary, but it has things in it that make it worth being a film with a Halloween theme going on and I like it a lot. 9/10

Movie Review - Inside Out 2
