So after another pretty eventful year, let's look at the year's top news:
Sony Hacked (again)
So after what happened a few years ago with the PlayStation hacks, you'd think Sony would've learned their lesson by now, but as it turns out, they haven't. Now my take on it is that everything that was revealed seems to be pointing at the cancelled but now carefully released film The Interview because it shows Seth Rogen and James Franco portraying characters who in the film, attempt to kill North Koren leader Kim Jong-un. Now one thing that these so called Guardians of Peace and certain hackers in North Korea don't know regarding this (well they may know or not depending on how everything has played out), is that this isn't the first time that Kim has been parodied/portrayed as Team America did this quite some time ago with the clever plot (spoiler alert) that had Kim being nothing more than a cockroach living in a robotic body and he wasn't killed. Now the good news here is that the film will be released on its release day (which was yesterday), but only in selected cinemas (most likely the independent ones) and services like YouTube so the film does have a future. However because of this hack, I feel that Hollywood as a whole may have to do things differently to avoid something like this happening again. Also among the information that was revealed, Spider-Man may have been given back to Marvel Studios after all but it didn't end well as well as some unreleased information about Bond 24 and the possibility that Mario may have got into the film business with Nintendo speaking to Sony about the idea. All I have to say is even though The Interview is in league with things like South Park and the thing that the film had in it, was it all really worth the hacking, the threats and all that? I mean don't get me wrong, if I was threatened by these people, I would comply. Hollywood will never be the same again.
Nintendo bringing out the big guns
After a pretty rough 2013, Nintendo knew that they would have to up their game this year if they ever stand a chance against their competitors and despite the lack of third party support, I think they may have done it. They released Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros., made a surprising hit with Hyrule Warriors, had the idea of a cash grab with Amiibos and it worked and themes were added to the 3DS to add a more personal touch for the players. Its clear now that Nintendo are serious when it comes to their games and I think they really pulled out all the stops to make sure that both the 3DS and the Wii U are big hits and honestly, i think they did well. I don't know if they will have quite the same year next year, but with Zelda Wii U coming out next year, we can only hope.
E3 2014
Now E3 this year wasn't as big as it had been last year, but I think it was a hit and miss for many of us. Microsoft finally got it right and only talked about games and nothing else. Sony showed their love and appreciation for their fans. Nintendo had a digital only event which was pretty entertaining as they have Robot Chicken on board to help. And EA and Ubisoft did well too, but maybe not as great as the big 3. Still though, its been a pretty good year in general for games and I hope next year will be even better.
Marvel and DC's slate of films for the next several years
Its going to be one hell of a great next several years as we have countless films coming out that we've been waiting for, forever. And speaking of that, both DC and Marvel have shown what they will be giving us in the way of entries in their respective cinematic universes. We have solo films, team up films, superhero team films and even a few TV shows that will tie into the events that unfold in the films. Its going to be great and I cannot wait.
So that's just a few of the highlights of this year and I know there are many other big bits of news out there too. If you have bits of news that you like to share (nothing personal obviously), then please comment below and we'll see what news will come out next year as we move into the half way point of the 2010s.
