Top 10 Worst and Most Disappointing Games of the 7th Generation

Now following from my top 20 list last week, I will be doing a few posts about the 7th generation of gaming over the next few weeks as the 8th generation slowly approaches. This list is games that from my point of view, could have been better than what it is and/or was one of the worst experiences that I vow to never do again for as long as I live. All the games on this list, will be ones that are currently released and I've played. As there hasn't been that many games that I've played that I find bad, this will be a top 10 rather than a top 20 and like with before, each entry will be from one franchise or just the franchise as a whole. Reviewed or not, it won't matter here, so let's start the list:

10: Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One
For anyone wondering, this was possibly the game that saw the downfall of the franchise because up until this game, it was a great series. I see why this game wasn't great as it was a completely new direction for the series and boy did it suck. A fixed camera that always screws things up and enemies constantly attacking you and not giving you a chance to rest, made this game fail on all levels. This could have been great if split screen co-op was available, but oh well. The franchise was fun while it lasted, just wish we had more of the gameplay that earlier games had.

9: The Simpsons Game
Most licensed games would be doomed, the moment they are released so I wasn't expecting much when this came along. The game does its best to spoof a lot of video games quite well and some parts are funny, but the gameplay is just terrible with a very bad camera and not enough stuff to do. In fact, all the playable characters weren't given as much playability than others (Marge in particular, only had 3 levels). This could've been great if not for the bad gameplay and camera work, but it comes to no surprise that a game like this would suck, especially for licensed games.

8: Most Motion Games
One of the big things that this generation had, were motion games. The Wii started it off and had motion controllers as standard and did a brilliant job of it, until it became apparent that there were too many casual games like Wii Sports and Wii Fit and not enough hardcore games like Smash Bros and Zelda for the console. The Kinect on the other hand, was more of a big deal, as it was the only one to actually use your entire body and without a single controller. Most games like Dance Central would work, but it's hard to develop a game that doesn't use a controller and it showed in games like Star Wars Kinect, Fable: The Journey and a few others. PS Move was just a Wii copy without the cable and wasn't really used that much in the games that it was made for, but it worked just as well as the Wii's controllers did. All the motion games should have been better, but with numerous deadlines, it was impossible to make a true motion game that hardcore gamers would love.

7: Rabbids
Rayman 4, a much anticipated game that promised a lot of things, never came out, thanks to these abominations that you call Rabbids. Most of the Rabbids games are just minigame compilations that would last only 3 hours to complete and had no replayability value, other than for the player to do better by getting a better score for more unlockable stuff. I hated all of them, expect for Rabbids Go Home, which was a platforming game that was significantly (despite being the same amount of time to complete) better. Thankfully, Rayman is returning to his roots with Rayman Origins and the upcoming Rayman Legends.

6: Sonic Unleashed
Now I know what some of you are thinking. Where's Soinc 06 and/or Black Knight?! Well, I've never played that horrible game and never will, so the only game that I despised more from Sonic in the 7th Generation, was Sonic Unleashed. The game had some of the best 3D Sonic gameplay, and the amount of time to complete the game was acceptable, but the major letdown was of course, the Werehog gameplay which was boring, slowly paced, and could've been better. Sonic as a werehog was in my opinion, a stupid idea and one that should've never been done. Despite that, SEGA did make up for this bad game with Sonic Colours and of course, it's 20th anniversary title, Sonic Generations, both of which are great games.

5: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Now this game isn't as bad as people say it is, however it's only on my list, simply because of the gameplay and the title of the game, not doing what it says you can do (the video above shows one of those things). The game basically shows what happens in the aftermath of Revenge of the Sith and before the events of A New Hope, making this a crucial part of the main Star Wars storyline. The story is good, the voice acting (with the exception of Starkiller whom of which I cannot stand his constant screaming) is good and the cutscenes look great visually, but in the end, it's ultimately the gameplay that let this game and it's sequel down. It can often be hard to use the force as well as the game says you can, and also the lightsaber battles aren't that great either. The levels are so big, that for the most part, it can be hard to figure out where you're going. Quick time attacks are quite lazy here, but I do like the fact that at the end, you can see what would happen if Vader was killed way before Return of the Jedi. But for anyone interested, the story is the only good part for this game overall.

4: Fable 3
Fable 3, while funny and has some of the best in British voice acting and also it's idea of showing a fantasy version of Britain in it's industrial times, and all the pretty settings and visuals, is bad. The gameplay is bad because there are just far too many loading screens, frustrating enemy battles (even with a co-op buddy or an AI character) and a lot of glitches. I was looking forward to this game and what we get is something that is visually good and has some great humour and voice acting, but bad gameplay. I cannot express how much this game sucks so much, that it's just funny to watch.

3: Capcom's Fighting Games
If there is any fighting game that sucks the most of this generation, is the many Capcom fighting games that were made. The controls are a joke as it makes special moves hard to do and the character selection (especially in M VS C and SF X T) is just weird. I say weird because half of the characters are characters that no one has ever heard of (like who the heck is MODOK?!) and some of the more well known characters (like oh I don't know, MEGAMAN!!!) aren't even present in the game. If there is anything positive that I can say about any of these games, is that the cutscenes and the back story of the characters are very creative and make use of the fact that the game is a crossover and it all chaotic.

2: Most Nintendo Games
The majority of the Nintendo game of this generation are OK, but could be better. A lot of the Mario games of this generation, use a lot of recycled ideas to make them great again and I'm just getting sick of playing the same game again. The Mii games are just too simple and easy for anyone to play and are not that great and Animal Crossing needs to have more stuff to do, instead of the same thing every time you play. I feel that Zelda and Metroid had a good run in this generation and some of the Mario games were great and had some original ideas thrown in. Just a shame that a lot of Ninty's games of this generation suck.

1: Call of Duty
There are many things that I can say about these games, but a lot of them, you would've already heard. These games are completely rubbish. The campaigns are a complete mess and not a single good idea was thrown in because you're just shooting and running the entire time and the online modes are a joke. I hate these games a lot and I don't ever want to play any of them again. There are far better games out there that are more well designed and this isn't one of them. If there is anything positive about this game that I can say, it's that it makes a fool of those gaming journalists that clearly have no gaming experience what so ever and who ever plays this and loves it, is clearly blood thirsty and will never get into the army for whatever reason. All those reasons alone, make this game the worst game of the 7th generation in my personal opinion.

I apologise for any assumptions and any bullying that I may have done with the number 1 game. I just hate it that much.

  1. I was agreeing with this article until the #2 spot. The Wii had a lot of shovelware, sure, but it also had an exceptional amount of stellar exclusives, and the DS had even more. If this were the GameCube era, I'd agree, but not this time around.
