Random Video Game Review - Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

You've heard a lot of us reviewers banging on about games that grew in popularity during the pandemic. So let's talk about another one. So growing up, I watched a lot of TV game shows where people take on very physical challenges and try to get to the end without falling. I've seen Total Wipeout, Takashi's Castle, Ninja Warrior and loads more. So the good and wacky people at Devolver Digital (known for their crazy and over the top games) gave us this multiplayer game that is basically the video game version of all those game shows. The mighty will fall no doubt so let's get cracking:

The game allows for up to 60 online players to compete in a series of events where they need to quite simply not fall. It's pretty much a knockout competition where the last being standing wins. Each event is a random minigame where the basic premise is to not fall, but there are some where falling doesn't happen such as one where you need to grab as many eggs for your team as possible. Every player is represented as a funny jelly bean like creature that can be fully customizable and has some additional abilities besides moving which includes jumping, grabbing, pushing and possibly more. To add some complexity, there be obstacles in every minigame that players can choose to avoid to get through to the next round. In addition to the falling, those who are too slow and/or fail to complete objectives in certain minigames, are eliminated but allowed to spectate for the rest of the session. After every set of events, players get in game currency to spend on customization options for your characters. Unfortunately, this game also supports micro-transactions for said currency too. The game is often updated with new seasons to keep people invested in the game and some limited items become available for purchase such as costumes of characters from other franchises.

It's a fun, silly little game that does exactly what it sets out to do. A shame it doesn't support local multiplayer, but given the amount of players per set of events, I'm fine with that. Good fun and well worth playing to escape from the pandemic if nothing else. 9/10
