Random TV Season Review - The Falcon and The Winter Soilder (Season 1)

Thinking back to Avengers: Endgame, the ending was of course used to establish where some of the surviving characters would be going moving forward. Things were not made clear about Wanda until we got WandaVision but for the supporting characters of Captain America, we knew that there would be some debate as to who the new Cap would be. For many fans, it was always going to be either Falcon or Winter Soldier as either of those two would make the most logical sense. But then we have to remember that it's not a decision that the original Cap has any say in even though we would like it to be. So we have a six episode long series that continues the adventures of the supporting Captain America characters with a film also in the works as a continuation of this very series. Let's take a look:

Six months go by since Sam Wilson (aka Falcon, reprised by Anthony Mackie) was handed the shield and struggling with the thought of it, he decides to hand the shield over to the US Government for a museum exhibition. Meanwhile Bucky (aka Winter Soldier, reprised by Sebastian Stan) attends therapy sessions to get over and reflect on his time as a brainwashed assassin which still haunts him, but has managed to be free of it. Little do the pair know that their time of freedom would be short-lived when a terrorist group that are on the belief that things were better during the Blip, become a major threat. Plus to make matters worse, a new Captain America (played by Wyatt Russell) is sworn in and our titular heroes have to make some unlikely allies with not just the new guy, but some old adversaries and friends as well to put an end to the terrorism and understand what it means to have the shield.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is more in line with what we're used to from the MCU compared to WandaVision which while continuing Wanda's story, felt like an attempt at doing an MCU styled sitcom with a Black Mirror feel. Both shows are good, but I'd say this one is a little more serious than the other as it explores a lot of different themes including terrorism, racism and how one little thing could make a huge difference for better or worse. It was great to see all these characters again and actually spend a bit more time with their developments as characters. Who knows if we will get this fourth Captain America film, but if we do, it will be an interesting film for sure. And Wyatt Russell is a fine actor. He may be playing this character who should never be Captain America, but hate the character and not the actor. He's only doing what's been scripted at the end of the day. 8/10
