This game was one of the most anticipated games of the year. With it being the sequel to the best Batman game ever, Arkham Asylum (which I have played), this game could take that title. I'm a huge fan of Batman so I should expect great things from this game. So without further ado, Let's review it:
Story:
The game takes place one year after the events of the last game and Quincy Sharp (Former warden of Arkham Asylum and now mayor of Gotham) has taken a large acre of Gotham to create Arkham City. Inmates from both Arkham Asylum and Blackgate Prison are transferred here and are allowed to roam freely in the area. Some criminals like, Two-Face, The Joker and The Penguin have marked their territories and will do anything to make Arkham theirs. Outside Arkham City, Bruce Wayne explains to the press of a campaign he's doing that will bring down Arkham City. Unfortunately Hugo Strange (the warden for Arkham City) arrests Bruce and gives him to Penguin. Bruce escapes Penguin and after getting his batsuit from Alfred (who sends it via Batplane), he then goes and tries to bring order in Arkham. Its revealed that The Joker still has some Titan formula in him from the last encounter with Batman and its slowly killing him. He then puts some into Batman later on and then its a race against time to bring order to Arkham City, Find the cure for the Titan formula in Batman and Joker, and find out and stop this mysterious protocol 10. In a sub-plot (that acts as DLC for the game), Catwoman is after Strange's loot and needs help from her friends to get in. She gets captured by Two-Face (later rescued by Batman) and then asks Poison Ivy for help.
In a way, the story feels intense like the first game and it manages to allow some of the more well known Batman villains like Joker, Two-Face, Mr. Freeze and Penguin to be part of the main story with others acting as cameos and side missions. With this game being Mark Hamill's last voiceover for the Joker, it certainly goes on a high and the ending is perfect for the end of Hamill's era. 9/10
Gameplay:
Gameplay is much like the same as the last game. You get some new gadgets as well as old ones which allows for more puzzles and combating. Gliding now has the ability to dive so that you can catch some air and fly upwards so that's a good feature. What's new to the game is side missions which involve other Batman villains that are not part of the main story (Helping Bane destroy Titan barrels around the city, Stopping Riddler, Zassk and Deadshot from killing innocent people and so on) which adds some more things to do once the main story is completed. Riddler Trophies are back and are now more challenging to get. In combat, enemies (over time) can be more harder to defeat in terms of what weapons they use (like Shields, tracking devices and so on) which can make stealth more harder than before. Most gameplay elements like Detective Mode haven't changed much but are still great as ever. Playing as Catwoman as well as Batman has its advantages like Catwoman can move on ceilings and can collect the pink Riddler Trophies and the green ones. She can also move faster than Batman in combat and stealth and she uses thief mode to pick pocket enemies and stealth.
Lots to do and all great additions. Some more work could be done but overall still good gameplay as ever. 9/10
Graphics:
While graphics look the same as the last game, they look more HD than before which is a good thing. Character models for the new villains also look great and resemble them well as do old villains which have had some minor changes (like Harley Quinn who looks more sexy and the Joker with his messed up face). Arkham City looks like the less popular part of Gotham which is probably the best place for the villains in many ways and like with the last game, dark elements are whats needed for any Batman game.
More or less the same as Arkham Asylum but with some minor changes to veterans of the game and some great character models for the newcomers. 8/10
Overall, this is the best Batman game to date. Its more intense, more exciting and more fun and enjoyable than the last game and more areas to explore and things to do. 10/10 (my first game to get a 10/10)
You may have noticed that I did not do the Controls part which I normally do in my Video Game Reviews. This is because I feel its not necessary to use in my reviews anymore.
