Video Game Series Review: Kid Icarus

Better late then never, so I apologise for the delay in this in advance. Anyway, since its debut back in 1986, Kid Icarus has been one of Nintendo's dark horse titles. It hasn't had that many games released but no doubt that Nintendo won't be making that mistake again. It became big on the NES which then gave it a sequel that was released on the Game Boy in 1991 and after Pit's appearance in Smash Bros Brawl, fans of the series were dying for a new entry and what better way to do that, then on the 3DS to truly show what the 3DS can do. But should this franchise have more games or not? My views show below:

Kid Icarus:
As the first game in the series, this basically explains the origins of the game's story. Its set in Greek times where the goddess of light, Palutena is forced to send her sister, the goddess of darkness Medusa, to be banished as a monster into the underworld. However Medusa plans to take over by forming an army to take down Palutena and her forces. Now its up to a single angel by the name of Pit, to help Palutena take down Medusa before all hell breaks loose. As the starting point of the franchise, its not really anything brand new or original as Greek mythology has been used a heck of a lot in many other franchises. Despite that however, the platforming, music and fun of the game is what makes it great in its own way. 9/10

Of Myths and Monsters:
Set sometime after the first game, Palutena has a nightmare, which a soothsayer interprets as a foreshadowing of an invasion by the demon Orcos and his minions. The goddess summons Pit – the leader of her army – and commands him to enter a special training that will give him the power to use Angel Land's three sacred treasures. To keep these safe from Orcos while Pit is on his mission, Palutena has them protected by three fortress guardians. After Pit has finished his training and defeated the guardians, the goddess equips him with the sacred treasures. Orcos appears and turns Palutena to stone, but Pit defeats him and saves her, restoring peace to Angel Land. In the ending, Pit soars into the sky. As in the Greek myth of Icarus, he flies too close to the sun and loses his wings. While the game continues the story as it gets better each time, the gameplay retains all of that from the last game while providing better and more detailed pixeled graphics to make the game for fun. And with some new mechanics added, this game proves t be even better than its predecessor. 9/10

Uprising:
After a 19 year hiatus, Kid Icarus returns on the 3DS with for the first time since the first game, 3D computer generated graphics, voice acting and a whole load of other gameplay mechanics along with it. In an attempt to defeat Medusa and free the world from darkness, Pit now faces his greatest challenge yet as the true ruler of the underworld, Hades, now plans to avenge Medusa and put the world in total darkness. Now Pit must ally himself with Palutena and various citizens to take Hades down and free the world from darkness. This game is the best in the series as it gives you everything that the other games have with a huge amount of new gameplay mechanics, making it the best game in the series so far. 10/10

Overall, the story is one that has been adapted in other franchises in some way, but its mostly the gameplay mechanics that make these games great and fun to play. I hope Nintendo will make more games over the coming years. 10/10
