Video Game Series Review: New Super Mario Bros. (1, 2 and Wii)

Now while this is a reboot of the original Super Mario Bros. games, it offers its own unique taste and new gameplay mechanics to make it fresh and new again. While it still does retain some elements of the original games, its still worth checking out, especially if your a hardcore fan of Mario. Does it manage to retain the legacy of the originals? Let's find out in my series review:

NSMB
So after a number of years waiting, we finally get another Super Mario Bros. game that not only is a reboot of the series, but also the first 2D side scrolling game in a long while in the main Mario series. Players can play as both Mario and Luigi and with some 3-dimensional graphics to match the standard in the current games, it's fresh out of the box. Each world has a map system (taken from SMB3), secret routes in certain levels (taken from SMW), each level having 3 Star Coins for the Mario Brothers to collect (a similar concept of SM64) as well as all the other usual things in a Mario game. With the addition of old favourite power ups (Star, Mushroom, Fire Flower and 1UP Mushroom), we also get the Mega Mushroom (which makes Mario or Luigi grow gigantic for a limited time), mini mushroom (which makes Mario or Luigi go smaller than their short selves and also makes them light weight with a higher jump) and the blue shell (which once acquired can allow the character selected to swim better, have a protected barrier of some kind and can be used in a similar fashion to when a Koopa shell is kicked). With the addition of all that, 28 minigames from SM64DS (with slight modifications) are also included in the package for replay value and fun. Overall, while it does seem very simple and somewhat easy to play, the game is great for long time fans of the series, in that it brings back old memories and has been modernised to fit into a new generation. 9/10

NSMB Wii
While not a direct sequel to the first game, this one is the first of the series to be put onto a home console. The gameplay and graphics are similar to its predecessor but have been redone to use the Wii's graphics engine. Players can have up to 4 players in one level (with a choice of Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad and Yellow Toad) which is a new addition and along with the mini mushroom and the usual power ups from the last game, we also get the Propeller Mushroom (allows players to fly in the air), The Ice Flower (like the fire flower, only with ice being shot out, instead of fireballs), The Penguin Suit (which while it has the same abilities as the Ice Flower, can also allow one to slide) and the return of Yoshi (who can be used in a similar or same fashion as his appearance in SMW). The Koopalings and Kamek return after a very long time since their appearances in SMB3 and Yoshi's Island 1. Also as a way to help in those tricky levels, the game now has a super guide, which can help a lot when stuck at certain points. Overall, while having similar gameplay and graphics to that of its predecessor, the game's new mechanics, make up for it and is definitely the ideal game for parties and long time Mario fans (like myself). 9/10

NSMB 2
Now a 2D game that is to have stereoscopic 3D is a risky move, but regardless, its a good attempt. The game retains a lot from the original game, but has some new elements with the focus being to get 1 million coins using whatever necessary to do so (going through levels, playing Coin Rush via StreetPass and SpotPass and so on) while still maintaining the story of rescuing the princess. In addition to most of the power ups from the original game (minus the Penguin and Blue Shell suits), the Super Leaf from SMB3 returns and uses its original abilities (tail whip along with some flying and gliding) and a new form of flower, in the style of the Gold Flower (letting Mario and Luigi turn golden and can use the powerful ball that they can throw to turn any object it hits, into coins). Also as a neat idea, the multiple coin block can now be put onto Mario or Luigi's head if fast enough to do so and it will allow them to collect coins as they run. Overall, while the 3D effects aren't as spectacular as most 3DS games, this game is still a lot of fun, but can be a deja vu at times. 8/10

So overall, its a great reboot to what was one of the greatest video games out there so all credit to Nintendo, me thinks. 9/10

Movie Review - Inside Out 2

I guess a sequel to the first makes sense here. I mean, for the most part, this franchise is all about the subject of growing up and with ...
