Before I kick off this review, I'm sure that many of you are wondering why I've called this an App review. The reason is that it was originally an app before it turned into something more. So with that out of the way, let's crack on. Angry Birds has been one of the most successful series of Apps in various app stores and with a large amount of work put into these games, they are still to this day, addictive. Is it still great? Lets find out:
Angry Birds
Released in 2009 and published by it's creator, Rovio (Chillingo and Clickgamer for iOS and PSP versions), the first game in the series is basically the pigs stealing eggs from the birds in different scenarios, making them very angry and will do anything to get them back, even if it caused them to break the piggies's forces using the power of a slingshot. So for the most part, you're firing birds at the pigs and some of them have various abilities that will help greatly. I won't give away too much with that because of spoilers. While the game does feel dated, now that it's been 3 years since it's release, the game is still very fun and is still getting updates and while their have been many versions of it, it's still one of the most successful in the series so far. 9/10
Angry Birds Seasons
Released in 2010 and was originally under the name Angry Birds Halloween before they threw Christmas levels in it, Seasons is just the same Angry Birds like the original. The only difference here is that the scenarios are based on annual events such as Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and numerous others. It does still get updates for it and it's always the first game to introduce new birds (after The Mighty Eagle), but really it's just Angry Birds with an annual event twist. That's it. 8/10
Angry Birds Rio
Released in 2011 and serving as a tie in to the animated film Rio, this one is once again, just Angry Birds, this time with a film thrown into the mix. What I like about this game is that it takes away the traditional Angry Birds gameplay and makes it better. There are levels that involve you killing some monkeys and there are levels where you need to free the other birds from their cages. It's also the first Angry Birds game to introduce a new way to see your overall score and stars and also the first to feature boss battles (which work quite well but very predictable to happen). You do at some point, get to play some of the birds from the actual film, but for the most part, its just the same old Angry Birds with some new stuff to get used to. Its just a shame that it was only updated during the year of the film's release. 8/10
Angry Birds Space
After waiting for at least 2 years, we finally get an Angry Birds game that changes the gameplay dramatically. And I like it. Angry Birds Space, has Red, Blue, Yellow and Black Bird along with Big Brother, The Mighty Eagle and later on, the orange bird, travel through a black hole and into space to help the new Ice Bird fight against the Pigs who have once again, stolen the Bird's eggs. Each of the birds have some new abilities for this game that work quite well. Red, Blue, Black and Orange Bird along with Big Brother, maintain their original abilities while Yellow bird gets a targeting system where you tap the screen once fired to send the bird flying in that direction. The Ice Bird can freeze anything it touches which help a lot with the blue birds and The Mighty Eagle can no longer complete a level with just one hit (which makes the game a little bit harder) but does however enter the level via a black hole. The eggs also have a playable role as you can use them to send objects flying. In addition to all these new abilities, the new gameplay allows you to take advantage of the planet's gravitational field in each level which works quite well. It does still get updates and the future of this game does seem positive. The new gameplay makes the game fresh and new again and who knows, maybe we may get some more games like this. 9/10
Bad Piggies
Acting as more of a spin off than anything else, Bad Piggies has you take the role of the pigs, whom as you've guessed are trying to grab those eggs from the Angry Birds. The way they do this, is by using a variety of materials, gadgets, gizmos and weapons to get them through a level and one step closer to the eggs. The levels in the game are basically, you having to get to the goal to complete the level. Unlike Angry Birds, you do that by making various contraptions, without the need of any slingshots. The 3 Stars system is in the game, however unlike Angry Birds where it's down to the score you get, here you get them by fulfilling various optional tasks in each level whether it be getting to the finish line within a time limit, not destroying the contraption and so on. Its a great game that makes you see the whole Birds VS Pigs thing from the pig's point of view. 9/10
Angry Birds Star Wars
Now a crossover like this was very unexpected, however the outcome actually works. All the birds are dressed as various characters from mainly the original trilogy and all their normal abilities are taken away and replaced with the abilities that match that of the Star Wars characters (Red using a lightsaber like Luke Skywalker and Black using the force like old Obi-Wan Kanobi are just some of these abilities). Using a mix of gameplay methods from Angry Birds and Angry Birds Space, this game is actually quite good. Rovio has done the franchise justice and have told the original trilogy their way which gets pretty darn close to the actual films themselves. What's even better is the fact that all the brids are dressed as rebels and all the pigs are dressed as Imperials (even Darth Vader is a pig). The Mighty Eagle however, doesn't make an apperance and is replaced by the Minenillum Falcon and we also get a Bird-ified Yoda who even though is only seen in the background and some cutscenes, is still pretty good. Last of all, we finally have the pink bird go into a different game other than Seasons. All in all, some very good stuff here, especially if you're a fan of both franchises.
So Overall, while the majority of the games suffer with the same gameplay each time, the overall package is great and is definetly worth trying if you're into Angry Birds. 9/10
