Video Game Series Review: LittleBigPlanet

Created by Media Molecule and published by SCE (hence the reason why it's a PlayStation exclusive), LittleBigPlanet has been one of the most innovative video games of all time with a Story Mode and a creative mode, both of which have been improved and become better in each game. Never have I seen a game that has a lot of creativity going into it from not only the developers, but the fans and gamers as well. And with the addition of Karting and Vita, can it get any better? Let's find out:

LittleBigPlanet
Released in 2008 (during the early days of the PS3), the first game has Sackboy helping the Creator Curators stop a traitor in their ranks from stealing their own creations and not sharing them with the world (later known as the Imaginshpere and I apologise if the spelling is wrong). The first set of levels are basically training levels to get you used to the game itself and it doesn't really kick in until the next world. As for the creation part, there is a lot of potential there with a lot of things to do that can make your custom built level great but because there are a lot of things for it, I won't go into too much detail but I will say that you will need to collect items in the story levels to use in your own level (which you can then publish soon after). You can also customise your Sackboy, your pod and your planets. Overall, this game is a great start to the series as it gives you a lot of things to do with a lot of playability to have once the main story is finished. 9/10

LittleBigPlanet PSP
Released a year after the last game (not exactly but you know) and for some strange reason, having the same name as the last game, Sackboy travels around the world and is asked by the Mystic to assemble a group of creator curators to go to the carnival in Brazil. And that's the plot in a nutshell. The creative side of the game is still there, but the majority of the game is just a direct lone of the first game, but with a different story and on a different console. I will also openly admit that I didn't play this game and because of the way things are going, I probably won't get a chance to, so my review is based purely on the footage I've seen. Its an OK game, but not as superior than it's predecessor. 7/10

LittleBigPlanet 2
Released in early 2011 and serving as a direct sequel to the first game, Sackboy's world is once again under attack, this time by an inter-dimensional  vacuum cleaner known as the Negativitron. Sackboy learns that there is a secret organisation known as the Alliance that are dedicated to stopping this beast and teams up with it's leader, Larry Da Vinci to form the alliance and stop the beast from world domination. In addition to the story, the creative mode can now be used to not only create levels, but to also create mini games using genres other than platforming. You can also create cutscenes for your levels and all content from the first game can be transferred onto this game (this includes levels, DLC and picked up items). Overall, it's a major improvement from the first game and the addition of all these new features (as well as the use of the PS Move controllers) make it fresh and innovative. 9/10

LittleBigPlanet Vita
Released earlier this year (by about 2 months), Sackboy once again must save his world from destruction. Along with the usual gameplay from before, some new gameplay elements are put in to make use of the front and rear touch pads which are to push things out or in and move them. The only downsides to this are that the create mode continues to be very complicated and for the most part, it would be too familiar to long time fans, especially with the music. Despite those things, it's still a solid game and is very fun to play as always.

Sackboy's Prehistoric Moves
I don't really have a lot to say on this game. This game is more of a spin off than a main game, and for the most part, it would feel like an introduction to the PS Move more than any thing else. Not the greatest game in my opinion. 6/10

LittleBigPlanet Karting
Released about a week ago, LittleBigPlanet Karting is the first racing game in the series. Sackboy's world is once again under attack, this time, by a group of scavengers known as The Hoard. Because of how fast they move, Sackboy realises that he can't go on foot this time and resorts to using a kart. And then its race time. Now the ironic thing here is that this game was jointly developed by Media Molecule (who previously did the other games) and ModNation creators, United Front Games. And after hearing that, you'd expect to see gameplay elements that were used in ModNation. That's where you're sort of wrong. The levels in this game are a mix of races, time laps, boss fights and battle arenas which for any game like this, is mandatory. The creative side is very similar to ModNation, the only difference is that with it being LittleBigPlanet, it will be very complicated. On that, overall the game is fun and enjoyable, but it doesn't really offer anything new in the racing genre and the LittleBigPlanet universe which kinda sucks. I also feel that Sony wanted this game out by the holiday season so that they have other games to offer in addition to All-Stars Battle Royale. 8/10

Overall, the series has become very innovative and has offered a lot in terms of creativity and gameplay. 9/10
