Now this was one of the most anticipated games of the year as it took up to 3 years to create (literally after the launch of AC2 meaning that Brotherhood and Revelations were serving as filler). It's been a moderately good series of games with each one bringing something new to the series and this one was no acceptation. Now the reason why I call this "Somewhat Disappointing is because, yes it did have a bad ending (for Desmond at least, Conner's was OK) but it's not as bad as Mass Effect 3. So here are the reasons why I call this somewhat disappointing:
Multiplayer
As I said in my Mass Effect 3 post earlier this month, the multiplayer aspect of a game doesn't really appeal to me. It's not because I'm likely to lose each time, it's because I don't see the point of it. Also when the next game is released, the multiplayer side of it, is then obsolete. When that happens, any online achievements that you want to get, can't be done. I never like the online multiplayer aspect of a game and I never will. Local Multiplayer I like, but online is a miss for me. Just saying.
Far Too Many Side Missions
Now side missions for any game are great as they increase the playability of the game. The problem here, is that there are just far too many of them. They aren't constructed that well and for the most part, it has you going all over the different maps (The Frontier in particular) just to find the location of whatever it is that you're trying to find. It is frustrating at times, but it does show that the game, even though it has been in the works for 3 years, it's not prefect. The best ones for me, are the naval ones as they have been constructed really well and always show an epic feel when the battles really start to get going. The others are OK, but do involve a lot of work, especially when it comes to actually finding them.
The Best Elements of the Previous Games not Being Explored Much Here
The best things about Brotherhood, were recruiting Assassins for the Brotherhood and raiding the Templar controlled areas. This game does have those 2 things, but unlike before, they aren't used in the main story as much. What I do like however about these elements for this game in particular, is that recruits all have different abilities so it's now no longer just a hidden blade and that's it. The matter of recruiting people is extended here because not only do you need to recruit people to the Brotherhood, but you can also recruit people to your homestead to do various jobs and to make up a good community. It's a shame, but considering on the rest of the game, it's understandable.
The Pacing of the Story
The story is longer than other games and I feel that the story starts slowly, but gradually picks up, allowing you to fully explore the areas around you. All the characters in the game, aren't that likable due to the amount of arguments and the arrogance that Conner has. And then there's the matter of the ending for Desmond. The ending starts out by saying that there is a choice to be made, but ultimately, you cannot make that choice. The choice is chosen for you and it will end up having Desmond (spoilers start) being killed by the pedestal he touches to save the world by unleashing Juno onto the world, when he thinks that the world has a better chance against Juno (spoilers end).
So even though there is all this stuff, the game is still good and one of the best games I've played all year. If you need a way to educate yourself about the American Revolution but aren't too bothered about how you hear it, this will be the game for you.
