Over the past couple of years, LEGO has gotten better and better, and this year is no exception. Sure we get rebooted LEGO themes and some new ones as well, but overall, LEGO has had a pretty good year.
DC and Marvel Superheroes:
In the past, LEGO haven't really explored the DC and Marvel Universes and while they did bring out a theme based on Spiderman and a theme based on Batman, it was either a license that was for the films in Spiderman's case or the Animated TV shows in Batman's case. It wasn't until earlier this year that LEGO managed to get a license from the actual comic book companies DC and Marvel so that they could go beyond Spiderman and Batman, and while the theme will be around for a good few years, it's good to know that they want this theme to go well and so far, they've done several Batman sets with one Superman set (featuring Wonder Woman) and it's been rumoured that there will be some movie tie in sets for Dark Knight Rises and the upcoming Man of Steel. In Marvel's case, they've only released one Spiderman set, one X-Men set and a decent amount of sets to tie in with The Avengers film and that has done well as well. Its also being rumoured that some more sets will be made to tie in to the upcoming Iron Man film Iron Man 3. So overall this theme has done well for the company and I can't wait to see what comes next.
Star Wars:
It's been a good few years since this theme started and it continues to be LEGO's best licensed theme. This year has seen a mix of sets from The Clone Wars, the films as well as a couple of collector's sets and even sets based on the video game series, The Old Republic. It's been a good year for Star Wars and with another film in the works, we can expect to see more sets coming our way so stay tuned.
Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit
So after a few years of Harry Potter, as well as Warner Bros acquiring TT Games, it became obvious that the next fantasy WB franchise to get the LEGO treatment would be Lord of the Rings and it's prequel, The Hobbit. While I've only played with a few of these sets, it's very clear that this will be another one of LEGO's long time licensed themes with some upcoming films on the way. For the most part, it seems to be a pretty good theme to have and I can see this being great. It also came to no surprise that TT Games would go and make a game based on the theme and from what I've seen, it looks great and has everything that made LEGO Batman 2 great so I look forward to playing it, but for now, this theme will be here for a very long time so stay tuned for more sets.
Unlicensed LEGO Themes:
Like with other years, LEGO have always relied more on it's own original themes to give them the money to do more, and while we have some reoccurring themes that continue to be great, this year we also get a spooky theme that is outside of the LEGO Studios line and into it's own one called Monster Hunters which has given us LEGO's first ever haunted house. LEGO have also brought back Dinosaurs which are bigger and better than ever before and they've also brought us a theme where you can create a LEGO version of some of the World's famous monuments in a theme called Architecture As well as those, LEGO have also brought back Friends after a very long period of time, City continues to be great with a focus on Space, Mining and Forest Police this year and finally, Ninjago and Hero Factory continue to be LEGO's best selling themes. Its been a good year for unlicensed themes.
So overall, it's been another good year for LEGO and with the promise of more collectable Minifigures as well as all the stuff I've mentioned already, 2012 has been a great year for LEGO and 2013 looks to be better.
