Before I get into this, I would like to point out that this film was initially going to be the 4th installment in the Toby McGuire series, but the filmmakers felt that they should reboot it, and so they did. The film was made with the intention of starting a new series of films with Andrew Garfield (who was hand picked for the title role thanks to his contribution in The Social Network) playing the title role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. But is the reboot any good? Let's find out:
So the film begins with Peter Parker as a child, who comes across his father's work (which at this time had been ransacked). His father gathers the paperwork and sends his son to stay with Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Peter later on finds out that his parents have been killed in a plane crash, which now makes his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, his legal guardians/parents. Several years have passed and Peter is now a teenager who gets bullied by Flash Thompson and has a romantic interest in Gwen Stacy, the daughter of a police captain named George Stacy, all at the Midtown Science High School. He returns home to discover his father's documents and discovers that he had been working alongside Dr. Curt Connors at Oscorp and goes to investigate (and this would be the place where he gets bitten by a spider). Learning that he has been given unimaginable powers from a genetically modified spider, Peter Parker begins to do things that a normal human being couldn't do, which eventually leads him to becoming Spider-Man, New York's protector as it were.
Considering that this film was up against a lot of competition when it was released, it's not as good as The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, but the film does exactly it's intention to reboot the series and start a new one. It's light hearted and funny at times, but otherwise it's an OK film. Not the greatest film I've seen, but it's an OK one at best. 8/10
