So completing my set of Doctor Who reviews so that I'm up to date and ready for the new episode this Saturday, here is a review of the interactive 3D PC games, The Adventure Games. Now as some of you will know, I've already done a review of The Gunpowder Plot so what I'm doing here is the remainder of them, so let's begin (and the majority of these, take place during series 6 of the TV show):
City of the Daleks
The Doctor takes Amy to Trafalgar Square, London in 1963, only to discover that the city is in ruins and the Daleks rule the land. The Doctor comes to the conclusion that the Daleks have somehow managed to gain power to alter history and after an encounter with them, he and Amy travel to Skaro to sort this mess out and stop the Daleks from any further alterations. Now considering that this game was up against some much bigger and better titles, I think only the fans will enjoy this. It allows players to explore Skaro in all it's glory and like with the other games, it has puzzles to solve, some stealth work to do, some collectibles to find (the majority of which have some historical facts as well as some facts on anything Who related) and playing as The Doctor and Amy, didn't really show much in the way of their abilities as they are both the same, more or less. But as I said, despite being the amount of time of gameplay is equal to that of a regular TV episode, it's enjoyable to play and fans will enjoy it a lot. 8/10
Blood of the Cybermen
The Doctor and Amy go to a Arctic base called Chisholm after the Tardis receives a SOS which the Doctor responds to. There, they find that the team that were there (with the exception of one worker) have all turned into Cyberslaves (which is one of the early stages of being developed into a true Cyberman, if I'm correct). As with all encounters with the Cybermen, The Doctor must now stop them before anything else happens. Basically it's like the Dalek one, except with the Cybermen, slaves and mats (and anything else Cyber) taking their place. The story is good, the playability is good, but I find that the puzzles are too easy. Its another one that fans will say its OK. Its not the greatest one and its certainly not the worst one, it's just OK and I'm sure everyone will love it. 7/10
TARDIS
As the episode title suggests, you're basically inside the Tardis for the whole game, switching between Amy and The Doctor who are both having problems with the Tardis as it enters a riptide of some sort. There isn't a lot of playability with the characters this time, but despite that, players will get a chance to explore the Tardis for what could be, the very first time doing so, but it doesn't let you explore the entire Tardis, just key areas like the control room and The Doctor's study. The game will test your Who knowledge and it will give you some memorable moments from past adventures as well, in the form of objects. So in a nutshell, this is more of a knowledge game than a action and adventure game, which is OK for the most part, but could be better. 7/10
Shadows of the Vashta Nerada
This is another game that has a very familiar and in a way, overused story where the Doctor gets separated from the Tardis, and his only of getting back, is to help the people in the area until he can find a way. In this case, he and Amy arrive in an underwater base in the 23rd century and a gigantic shark like creature known as a Zarlok, charges into the tunnels of the base and manages to destroy the tunnel that is the only tunnel that can lead back to the Tardis. Meeting some civilians, the 2 of them discover that a few workers have been suffering from some kind of disease, and when the lights go out, that disease is in fact, the Vashta Nerada. So once again, it's up to the Doctor to stop the darkness from closing in on himself, Amy and the civilians. Its a good story that is very fast paced and action packed. It brings back the good things that people love about these games and I would say it's the second best of the 4 games in series 1 (the first being the Dalek one). 8/10
So like with the Gunpowder Plot, it's an OK series of games that just keep getting better over time and should there be any more, we could see an appearance on a console any time soon (hopefully not as bad as the ones that were previously released for Nintendo and Sony platforms). 8/10
