Now this series of films are quite odd and in a way weird. As you all know, I've seen the second film and have reviewed it and honestly, it's just the first film with some slight differences in regards to the plot. With the third film now out, it never really occurred to me that I haven't done a review of the first one, so it seems only fair to look at that one in addition to the new one, so with that in mind let's take a look at the 1st and 3rd instalments of The Hangover:
Part 1
I'll just make this very quick and say that there are 4 men to begin with, one of them (named Doug Billings who is played by Justin Bartha) is having a bachelor party and the 4 of them go to Las Vegas where they spend the night there after a few drinks. Afterwards, 3 of the men wake up with a hangover and have no recollection of what happened the previous night and with Doug no where to be found and the clock ticking, they try to retrace their footsteps to find him before the wedding happens. Considering that this was the first film in the series, I also find it to be the best, in my opinion. Its very funny, explores all known things to happen when an individual has a hangover and I enjoyed it a lot. Just a shame that the 2nd film was just the same thing all over again but with a few differences. 9/10
Part 3
So here's part 3, the third and final film in this series, and surprisingly, the only one to not have a hangover for the entire film, until towards the end of course (slight spoilers there). Following the events that happened in Bangkok, Leslie Chow (who if I haven't said earlier, is played once again by Ken Jeong) causes a prison riot in the maximum security prison that he is in, and escapes in the hopes of reaching the USA. Meanwhile, Alan (a member of the wolfpack who if I haven't mentioned before, is once again played by Zach Galifianakis) acquires a pet giraffe, who's life is short lived on the road, before coming home to his family who as always are given a low level of screen time and come to terms with a fatal consequence in the family. The rest of the Wolfpack (Phil Wenneck (played once again by Bradley Cooper), Dr. Stuart "Stu" Price (once again, played by Ed Helms) and Doug Billings (played once again by Justin Bartha)) agree to get some help for him, but things get awry when gangster, Marshall (played by John Goodman) and his head of security, Black Doug (who you may remember from the first film and is played once again by Mike Epps) attack and kidnap them. They have the Wolfpack go to find Chow so that Marshall can get his gold back and that Chow can get his much deserved sentence for his rank of being the most wanted criminal in the world, but to make things harder, Marshall takes Doug hostage so that if the remainder of the Wolfpack fail, he'll be shot. Will they succeed? Will we come across some old friends and foes? And more importantly, will they get a hangover this time? See it to find out. So from what I can see, it's an alright film. It is by far better than the last one with it's new storyline, comedy and characters, but it's not as funny as before and has little to no hangovers until the very end. Still, it does provide some closure to the series that it has been and at least their attempt of giving us a different storyline is a good move to take. Just a shame that it what could have been a great end to a some what OK series, ended with a not so funny film with a few flaws in its story and repetitive ways. 7/10
As the series is now complete, here's what I think of the series as a whole. It does well to show what can happen when one has a hangover, but at times, may take it a little too far with the jokes and the adult humour. As a whole, I would say that its worth a watch to see what can happen when you have a hangover, but I would just stick to watching the first film and leave it at that. You can watch the sequels if you wish, but prepare to be disappointed with what you see. 8/10
