Doctor Who Review - The First Doctor (William Hartnell)

Now I will admit in saying that I've never seen the classic series as a whole (and what I mean by that, is that I've only seen bits of it, not a full length episode, story arc or even a series) so the reviews for all except the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th Doctors, will be based on the footage I have seen and what other people think of them. I begin with the very first doctor who was played by William Hartnell for 3 years (1963-1966) and a one off special in 1973 before his death. Unlike the other incarnations, Hartnell's version of him, had a wig and his character was described as a young doctor, but has the most aged physical appearance. In the series narrative, this was described as the Doctor's original form.

As the doctor, Hartnell was very patronizing and grumpy towards his companions and he also had a granddaughter, whom of which he has a strong bond with. He can sometimes be forgetful and can at times, have problems piloting the Tardis. After a while, the doctor actually began to share a bond with his companions and enjoyed travelling through time and space, eventually seeing the Tardis crew as his family. He was the first of the Doctor's incarnations to have the Daleks and Cybermen as his enemy, thus making them both the oldest of the Doctor's enemies (although its unclear as to whether all or some of the Doctor's incarnations have encountered them).

As the first doctor, Hartnell did a great job of establishing the character and the show and is one of the most well loved and remembered incarnations of the Doctor, also making him one of the greatest as well. 9/10
