For those of you wanting any E3 news, please check out my report of it as I won't be covering it here. That said, let's see what's been happening this week that's non E3 related:
Film Theories - What's the point of rehashed films?
So with nothing big to report this week (well except for E3 which I've already covered), time for another theory (though I'm starting to think that they are more about opinions of topics than actual theories, but anyway). So for those of you who don't know the phrase "rehash" means, its basically where something is reused and adds little to nothing to make it significant nor new. I honestly don't see why so many filmmakers think its a good idea to make sequels or remakes of some of their or others' films and instead of making something new, they just use the thing they or others' used before thinking that people will give them money to see it. Now to be fair, a lot of people who make films these days are in it for the money and in a way, I feel that the big film distributors are using some directors and making them their personal slaves. That is indeed the case with those who work on films based on things that many of us grew up with. But going back to the topic at hand, when somebody makes a sequel or a remake to a film, they have to make it both better and more original than the original or first film. That way, people will enjoy the film more than they need to and critics will give positive reviews of said film. Man of Steel was effectively a rehash of the same origin film that we've heard for many, many years with little to nothing added to make it any more fresh or new. I think in general, when you want to make something that you want to make better than its original state, you need to find something that will make it both better and original and not just a simple rehash of the original or last film's story. It doesn't always work and not everybody will like it. For a film like Man of Steel, there isn't anyway that anybody can make Superman's origin story any better or original than it already is. Its just one of those stories that no matter how hard people try, it just very complicated to make it a better film. So the point of rehashed films is that there is no point to it. Its just some lazy film maker's excuse to make more money by giving us a film that we've already seen, just with little to no improvements or differences made to it (but that being said, I still like Man of Steel despite its flaws).
So in news that I consider minor but still worth mentioning, Harry Potter Stars are getting a lot of work, Doctor Who goes on tour, WB launches Looney Tunes and DC merchandise in celebration of the World Cup, Dreamworks set to make Dragons 2 a huge hit and Ubisoft gets criticism about sexism in some of their upcoming games.
Now for the week's film and video game releases:
Films:
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Released in most areas with more to follow. Review coming soon)
Video Games:
Entwined (PSV) (Worldwide)
Enemy Front (Windows, PS3 and 360) (Worldwide)
