Villains is one thing, but the real thing that both scare and excite people more than anything else, is the monsters. They are the things that made the horror genre and eventually other genres, what they are today and everyone despite how terrified of them we may be, love them. Today I give you my top 25 monsters that I feel deserve to be known and can be described by many as both scary and freaking' awesome. All the monsters on the list won't all be scary, but they are ones that I would consider as true monsters from the get go. So with that said, let's take a look at 25 monsters that I personally love:
25 - James P. Sullivan (aka Sulley)
While he may not be the scariest or most deadly on the list, Sulley is one monster that despite his friendliness towards others, knows how to scare and surprisingly, that's actually what he does for a living. He looks like a monster, scares the living daylights out of people as a monster, but if you ever need a hug, he would be up for that too. Just don't expect him to be scary all the time because he isn't, but he's still worth a mention.
24 - Backpacker Turned Werewolf
Don't know about you guys, but this is no ordinary werewolf. I mean, just look at him. Does that look like a typical werewolf. To me, that would be a big fat no. He looks more like genetically mutated monster than a wolf of some description. But anyway, if you ever backpack in Yorkshire, don't ever cross paths with a were-wolf like this because chances are you'll either be dead or turn into one yourself.
23 - The Gremlins
So when you put a drop of water onto a Mogwai, they then start to produce several other Mogwai with their personality and behaviour dramatically altered. But once you feed them after midnight, they become the mischievous, bad mannered and chaotic Gremlins. These monsters are no easy task to get rid of as they will wreck havoc all over the place, killing innocents along the way with their one weakness being bright lights. giving them water will just have them become an army and will continue to wreck havoc all over the place. Don't ever give them water, don't ever feed them after midnight and don't ever expose them to bright lights unless you have no other way of defeating them.
22 - The Were-Rabbit
So like with Sulley, this may not be the most scariest of monsters on this list, but when you think about, it can't always be a were-wolf. There are loads of animals out there that can get the "were" in them and this is among them. It may cause havoc and wreckage everywhere, but unlike a were-wolf, its after the next most precious thing. The Vegetables. Better stay of this guy Flint Lockwood (the main protagonist of the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films) because he will eat all your vegetables up. But despite his intentions, doesn't he look like the guy that you just want to get a hug from? I mean, just look at him. He's after a hug. Whatever you have growing in your garden, make sure its safe a secure or otherwise, a rabbit will come and eat the stuff you're planting and a were-rabbit will make things a whole lot more worse for you.
21 - Alien
I'll be honest, I've never seen a single Alien film since I first heard about them. I have seen both Alien VS Predator films and the prequel Prometheus, but aside from that, I haven't seen them. That being said however, I have done enough research and watched videos about them which I feel is enough for me to put them on this list. They are by far, among the most scariest of monsters who would rather use a body that's not their own (like humans for example) to keep the species going by any means. They don't care about the host body. They only want to survive like any species would, but the problem they have is that they have to kill others to keep them alive. They are scary, they love to kill and that is pretty much what you should expect from the typical blood thirsty monster (or alien in this case)
20 - Predator
Even though they refer to themselves to be what's known as Yautja, we all know that they are Predators. Unlike the Alien who kill to survive, the Predators kill for sport, but there intention is to kill the most dangerous species out there as opposed to any species, among them being the Alien. They have advanced weaponry, but despite how technologically advanced they may be, they still act like a tribe. They may not look like much from the outside, but when you see their faces, they can be quite scary. I haven't seen all the films, but I do know that unlike the Alien, they have no means to harm the humans, unless they get in their way. So may not look like much, but once you see what's under that mask, that makes them scary.
19 - Great White Shark (Jaws)
The success of Jaws has certainly paved the way for more thriller films about giant human eating creatures and while the majority of them don't live up to how great Jaws is, we wouldn't have them without that film. The great white shark can be described as one of the most deadly creatures in the sea as they like to eat their pray whether that be fish or humans. But nothing is more deadly than the shark in the film Jaws. I mean it is humongous. Its big enough to bring down a big boat. That big people. That big. You better keep away from the sea if you're travelling lightly, because you never know, a shark could be lurking by.
18 - Terminator
Now we've had a monster who uses technologically advanced weaponry, but now let's take a look at a monster who is all technological. The Terminators are among the most deadly of cyborgs. They look like metallic skeletons with a sort of humanoid body, but what makes them monsters is the thing they have about wiping out the human race, leading to an Apocalypse to happen and so on. They look very scary and while Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator serves mostly as the protagonist, he himself played a Terminator who was actually bad in the first film. They will stop at nothing to destroy the human race, but what happens when all humans are wiped out? Nobody knows at this point, but I guess we'll find out soon enough.
17 - The Invisible Man
A lot of fictional characters that we know and love are known to be the way they are because of experiments gone wrong and in the case of The Invisible Man, this is actually not the case. The man he once was, did some experiments in the hopes to discover the secrets of invisibility and as such, he was successful as he himself became invisible. Now what makes him a monster is just how smart and crazy he is when it comes to using his invisibility to his advantage. It can cause him to be lost forever and never be seen by the human eye and it can make him a monster just by the way he does things. Clever, mad and full of pranks and schemes, this is one monster that you should never blink at because once you blink, he's gone forever.
16 - Zombies
Do I even need to talk about these monsters? I mean they are by far the most overused yet popular of all the monsters on this list and honestly, who wouldn't have these on their top monsters list. The general gist of it is some kind of experiment goes wrong and the scientists fail to contain and it starts to spread, thus causing a number of the human race to turn into zombie like beings with only a handful surviving due to them being immune to the virus. That's basically what most zombie flicks and games are all about. But this beings can be killed easily and can be quite dumb as well because well, their brainless. But ever get into close range of one or many without a weapon and your dead meat. Who knows when the apocalypse will happen, but at least we know what the side effects of it are like.
15 - Toby (Paranormal Activity)
The main antagonist of the Paranormal Activity films is easily among the scariest monsters on this list. You never see him. He is literally a ghost who haunts people, making all sorts of noises that causes mayhem and havoc all over the place and can easily possess people to do his bidding. The series may have gone down hill recently, but when you see a Paranormal Activity film, there will be many jump scares and its one of those films that has affected me greatly. After watching each film, it makes it hard for me to sleep at night. That's how much of an impact this series of films has had on me. So the next time you decide to spend a night or two in a place that has strange activity going on, you may not come out of it alive. Little boys and the ladies sure, but everyone else will not survive what is to come.
14 - SkullGreymon
Now I've seen a lot of strange and weird anime in my time, the earliest of them was Pokemon (which by the way, Nintendo only have the publishing rights and nothing else) and its long time but not as popular competitor, Digimon. Now the monsters in both franchises are for the most part, not scary in my opinion, but are pretty awesome nevertheless (well for the most part anyway). But having any or all of those monsters on this list wouldn't make it fair on all the other monsters, so in the end, I had to determine which one I consider both scary and in some way awesome and that ladies and gentlemen, is SkullGreymon from Digimon. Unlike Pokemon where the monsters evolve gradually and stay that way, the Digimon can evolve when in battle and would often stay that way for only a limited time and then go back to their original forms. SkullGreymon is basically the alter-ego version of Greymon who would evolve to this form if treated badly. Unlike other evolved Digimon, this one cannot be controlled and can easily pick off its foes and is often regarded as a very powerful and deadly Digimon. This in my opinion is one scary looking beast and of all the anime monsters I've seen, this I felt has been underrated for such a long time which is why I feel this monster deserves to be on this list. Treat your Greymon right and just hope and pray that it never turns into this scary and uncontrollable beast.
13 - Bowser
Despite his cartoonish appearance and his countless attempts to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom, you have to give credit to the spiky turtle creature that is Bowser (or Koopa in some areas of the world). I mean he's been trying to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom for well over 25 years and has still be thwarted by his arch nemesis, Mario and his brother Luigi (which for a while, Bowser called him Green-Stache until the Year of Luigi) for all that time. But like with villains like Megatron (Transformers), Bowser has grown a lot of respect for Mario which shows in the Mario RPGs where he is often forced to form a truce with him when an enemy of his threatens his quest for power. Often he would reach his ultimate goal of conquering the world when he gets his hands on various artifacts and magical objects, but because his plan would always involve kidnapping Princess Peach regardless of whether she plays a part in his plan or not, his conquest is often cut short because of Mario and his allies. Still, I do think that Bowser is one badass monster who can be scary when he needs to be (especially in his appearances in the Smash Bros. games) and has an army ready to help with invasions and his ultimate goal which like most villains is to take over the world or in his case, The Mushroom Kingdom.
12 - Scarecrow (Arkhamverse)
OK so this might be me cheating a little bit considering that this was and still is a human being, but when you think about it, pretty much all of Batman's villains are monsters in themselves all thanks to Batman's influence. Joker was made by Batman accidentally letting his human form fall into a pool of acid, Harvey Dent got one half of his face in acid revealing his double personality thus making him Two-Face and the list goes on. In the case of Scarecrow, what makes him scary is the way he uses fear against his foes that makes him more of a monster than he actually is, particularly in the Arkham games. To date, he has only ever been seen in the very first game Arkham Asylum with remnants of him in Arkham City. He is however going to be the main antagonist of Arkham Knight, the last game of the series which in turn, would put his plan into motion on taking over Gotham and put it into an eternal fear. All of that, makes him more monster than man. Whatever version of him you may like, just remember that he is no ordinary human and will make your fears, real.
11 - Slender Man
So some of you Doctor Who fans out there will notice that this monster looks very similar to The Silence, but its not one of them. This is Slender Man who is widely regarded as a creepypasta villain (a creepypasta for those of you who don't know, is basically a creepy story that floats on the internet. Look it up because there are quite a few of them) because of the nature of the being that he is. So there's this indie game called Slender where the general idea is that investigators would go round a forest and collect a certain number of pages with the pressure rising up each time and if they turn around, Slender Man is there and if he catches you, its game over. Even though he's only appeared in a video game, some people regard him as a legend while others believe that he exists in some form when you wonder round a forest in the dark. Some people even have evidence of his existence in photographic form. Either way, if you decide to go to the woods today, don't go in the night and don't go alone because Slender Man could be near and can eliminate you if need be.
10 - Frankenstein's Monster
Created by a mad scientist who wanted to discover the creation of life, this is what he got. A monster with various human parts, but with a criminal mind for a brain, hence his actions that cause everyone to hate him. To be honest, I think this is just one of those monsters who is just too misunderstood and generally means no harm, but his actions make him a monster towards everyone he meets. He throws a girl in a river hoping that she would float like a flower, but she drowns instead and other actions that he does, just makes him hated by everyone. That is, except for us who live in the real world and regard him as one of the greatest monsters that ever lived and one that helped shape the horror genre to what it is today with the help of a few other Universal Monsters too. Big, misunderstood, but generally a nice guy, this is one monster that many should just avoid or at least try to help him any way they can.
9 - Dementors (Harry Potter)
Now those of you who have watched the Harry Potter films will know that the Dementors had two designs. There was the hooded one that was seen only in film 3 and then it took the form of some dark looking ghoul from then on out. Regardless of how you see them or how similar they are to the Nazgul from Middle-Earth (who by the way I give an honourable mention to as I had to pick between them or the Dementors), they are neither foe nor ally. Their only purpose is to take escaped prisoners of Azkaban back to that prison which was the case until Lord Voldemort's influence that had them turn to his side and help him in his preparation to kill Harry Potter (though unbeknownst to him that he is one of the Horcruxes that form Voldemort's soul). They can make any situation feel dark and depressing and can drain your soul. Only known defence against them is a Patronus Charm which effectively is the opposite of darkness and depression and can keep Dementors at bay as there is no known way of killing them. They may be dark and they may drain your soul, but if you can protect yourself against them, then you'll do just fine.
8 - Reapers (Mass Effect)
The main antagonists of the Mass Effect games are big, technologically advanced living spaceships that like to destroy anything and everything in its path as part of what's known as the harvest. My understanding based on what I know from playing the games is that the harvest is mean't to be this thing that the Reapers do after every millennia where they wipe all of the advanced races in each cycle and will continue to do so until the cycle can be broken which is where the series protagonist Commander Shepard comes in and based on the players choices in all 3 games, you can either destroy them, control them or do something known as synthesis where everyone gets some robotics inside them and the Reapers remain alive, but strive to do good in the universe and not bad. Or you can forget all those choices and instead have the cycle continue. Reapers are big and can destroy anything in its path. Although they can expose their weakness when firing their laser beam which does make them vulnerable for a short time, but otherwise they can be hard to kill, even more so if there's an army of them. Beware their power as they can do all sorts of things like indoctrination and destruction. Better make sure we're ready for anything like this or we won't stand a chance.
7 - Cronos (God of War)
Now I'm not sure if you would count a Titan as a monster, but having seen this titan in action and based on the looks he has, he can definitely be known as a monster, and a giant one at that. The God of War series follows Greek mythology in a fictitious style and Cronos is basically the last of the Titans who serves as the father of Zeus, making him the grandfather of Zeus's son who would eventually overthrow and kill the two, Kratos. I do in a way, feel sorry for Cronos because of all the pain that his son and the other gods have given him and his fellow Titans. If it wasn't for his wife who thought Cronos eating their children because of a prophecy that says that his children will overthrow him was bad and didn't let Zeus go free, Cronos wouldn't be in the mess that he is in and I guess in a way, he might as well have allowed Kratos to kill him to end his suffering which in God of War 3, he does just that while also giving us one of the best ever boss battles in any game to date. Giant, full of sorrow and suffering, this gigantic monster is one that you can feel sorry for, but enjoy hurting him in a boss battle.
6 - Orcs (Middle-Earth)
OK so the're cockney accents may be quite distracting at times, but as anyone should know, you don't mess with an Orc unless you're properly prepared for them. This is what I felt when I played Shadow of Mordor because I personally could never think of how powerful an Orc can be until I played that game. I knew for a fact that they were scary, ugly and menacing, but never thought they would be tough to fight against. But then again, when you have a director like Peter Jackson who makes all the main characters look invincible against Orc kind, it can be hard to work out how powerful they can be. They may not be as menacing or as scary as the Nazgul, but Sauron's foot soldiers will always be the best of the monsters in Middle-Earth in my eyes.
5 - Dracula
The supposed leader of the Universal Monsters that unlike the vampires in Twilight can make vampires look scary but awesome, Dracula is in my opinion, the original and best vampire that there is. He's scary, sucks people's blood for a living which in turn makes them either dead or serve his doing as vampires themselves and looks evil and powerful even when he's not sucking blood. Compared to the Twilight crowd, he makes the vampires great and not depressing and he is in my opinion, one of the greatest if not the greatest monster that ever lived and much like with Frank's monster, is regarded as one of the Universal Monsters that helped make what Halloween and the horror genre is today which is great.
4 - The Weeping Angels (Doctor Who)
Of all the Doctor Who monsters and aliens that are out there, the Weeping Angels are among the most terrifying of the bunch. Unlike most of The Doctor's enemies, they don't move unless you blink or turn your head to another direction and with a single touch, they will trap you in the past with no way out and even with the Tardis, The Doctor cannot come and save you. Well, at least that's the gist of it. There are of course other ways that the Weeping Angels kill their victims as well as trapping them in time. But ultimately, its the way they can move when people blink or look away. It makes them scary and it makes them threatening so the next time you see a statue, don't take your eyes off it because who knows, it could be a Weeping Angel.
3 - T-Rex (Jurassic Park)
So if the history of the Earth is true, then this would be the only monster on this list that is real, but in this case, its a fictional take on the beast but a take down by one of the greatest film makers out there, Steven Spielberg. While most dinosaurs tend to be plant eaters, the T-Rex is among the handful that's a meat eater and that's pretty much the case with him/her in the films as it manages to kill off some of the main characters (though at least it didn't kill off the stereotypical ones first like most films do) and can be pretty darn scary when it starts chasing people as well as trying to catch their scent. But whether its extinct or not, don't ever come across one or otherwise, you'll be its lunch.
2 - King Kong
Being one of the first giant monsters that ever lived (typically known as a Kaiju), King Kong is basically a giant ape who is the last of his kind and much like with Frank's monster, can be best described as a tragic villain who is misunderstood and means no harm, but the things he does, causes harm to those around him. But that's likely due to how the humans in the very first film and the Peter Jackson remake, dealt with him and treated him wrongly. He behaves like most apes do, but at a more grander and more destructive scale. But he does like the company of human women which for the most part, keep him calm and collective. Not sure if its a love relationship or just a friendly one, I got mixed messages whenever I saw their scenes so yeah. He's big, he's an ape and will do anything to get what he wants, even if he has to destroy stuff to get it.
Before we get to number one, I don't normally do these, but as I did it last year with the villains list, here's a few honourable mentions:
The Wolf Man - A regular human who got bitten by a wolve. Similar to backpacker but otherwise OK.
The Phantom (Phantom of the Opera) - Not really that big of a monster, but still regarded as one of the greatest that ever lived.
The Bride of Frank's Monster - Not really a monster as such, but still considered as a Universal monster because of the success of the film she was in.
Killer Croc - Just the many Batman villains that really are the monsters that they are, but Scarecrow only just beats him.
Venom - A monster that can be regarded as the evil version of Spider-Man and uses different hosts.
Daleks - They may be the Doctor's long time enemies, but unlike many, I don't think they are scary.
Cybermen - Who knew robots could very well take over and these guys do just that.
Sontarans - Monsters who love war and will willingly fight with honour. Too funny and over the top to be on this list.
Sandman (Spider-Man) - Another monster from Spider-Man's rouge gallery and sand makes him unstoppable (except when he comes in contact with water of course)
Doomsday (Superman) - The one monster that was able to kill the Man of Steel without a single use of Kryptonite.
Nazgul - They hunt the One Ring, but compare them to the Dementors and you can say that they just don't feed off souls in quite the same way.
Chernabog - The biggest of Disney villains, but just doesn't have much of a story to be on this list.
Gill-man - Regarded as one of the great Universal Monsters, but not scary enough in my opinion.
Big Daddy - They were once humans and now they are just the tragic monsters that they are, roaming round the underwater and corrupted city of Rapture.
Kratos - Not necessarily a monster as such, but the acts he does in the God of War games, say otherwise such as having no remorse for anyone and only kills for vengeance, regardless of his kills being gods, humans or whatever else.
Ganon - He may be just a demon boar, but being the most reoccurring villain in the Zelda series, can make him one badass monster.
The transformations of some Disney Villains (like Jafar and Maleficent) - makes them truly monsters than they actually are. Nuff said.
1 - Godzilla
The king of monsters himself. I mean I don't think there is any other monster out there that can be better or just as good as him. Given that he came after King Kong, he is huge compared to the big monsters on this list and a lot of people call him an anti-hero because he wants to rid the world of kaiju threats, but in doing so, he has to cause a lot of destruction which puts the human race at risk. In most films that he has been in, the humans react to him in a very odd manner (though it was the Japanese at the time so kind of makes sense. No offence), but I think when the American produced films came out, the humans react more naturally to the kaiju monster that he is. He's big, full of power and strength and should never be messed with because chances are you'll get yourself into a lot of trouble and that's why Godzilla is number one.
Happy Halloween everyone!!!
