From one iconic horror film to the next. Now of all the films that I'll be reviewing this year in this month, this would be by far the oldest and much like with The Shining, its a film that I've waited a long time to finally sit down and watch and I can honestly say that of all the very old black and white films that I have seen, this would be among the greatest of the bunch. Alfred Hitchcock certainly knows what he's doing when it comes to his films and this is one of his greatest achievements. So let's take a look:
Now before I begin, I am aware that there are sequels to this film, but to me, Psycho was always just the one film. It didn't need sequels. It was good as a stand alone film. But nevertheless, I may look at those films another time, I may not. We will see.
Our story mostly focuses on Marion Crane (played by the late Janet Leigh) who wants to get married to her boyfriend, but the two of them barely have any money for such a thing to happen. She then returns to her workplace at a realtor's office when a client comes in with $40,000 (more when adjusted for inflation) to purchase a house. She hands the money in cash over to Marion for her safekeeping, which then has her steal it and leave town. She then starts to drive out of town, but it isn't long before some odd events happening, thus leading her to the Bates motel where unbeknownst to her, there is a disturbed killer that lurks there.
Now much like with The Shining, I saw numerous spoofs and references to this film way before I first watched it earlier this year and I got to admit, its really good. Even though it can be classed as a cross between a horror and a thriller film instead of solely one or the other, it is really good. The music especially, makes the situations in the film feel uncomfortable and mind bending to sit through and its one of those films that when you watch it, you cannot stop talking about it. It really is that good and like with what everyone else has said, it is one of the greatest films ever made and should not be ignored. 9/10
