At the start of this year, I did a mini review of the first Ghostbusters which I thought was very good and I consider an all time favourite film of mine. Several months later and that is still the case. Now its time for me to look at the sequel which most of you have pretty much said that you don't like it and having seen it myself, I can see why a lot of you hate. Its not the worst sequel I've ever seen, but it isn't the best one either. Why you may ask. Well let's take a look:
So much like with other films where after succeeding in something, you decide to move on, that's pretty much what you get here. Its been 5 years since the now disbanded Ghostbusters have saved New York from the demi-god Gozer and the gang have since moved on to do other things, following being sued and barred from investigating the supernatural. In doing so, Ray now works at a book store and also serves as an unsuccessful children's entertainer with Winston, Egon works in a laboratory on the Columbia University Campus where he studies human emotions and unsurprisingly, Peter is now hosting a television show about psychics. Peter's former lover has since had a child and when a supernatural force causes the baby's carriage to be bought to a busy junction, it looks like a job for the Ghostbusters, but after 5 years, would they be willing to protect New York once more?
Now when it comes to sequels, you have to make them better than the first film by doing things a little bit differently, but have an open mind for what you can do with the characters in the next film. Now in the case of say the Hellboy films, Guillermo del Toro had a clear vision on what he wanted to do with the characters in the films and said himself that you can do so much with the characters. Here however, it felt like the film makers made little to no effort to give us anything different or new and instead we're stuck with not quite the same stuff that happened before, but very similar things happening. Not the best sequel to any film ever made, but not the worst one either. 6/10
