Well first of all, Merry Christmas to you all. Hope you've been unwrapping many presents and been stuffing yourself silly too. As always at this time of the year, I generally tend to review any of the new Christmas specials that are on TV and for the most part, these generally tend to be only the Doctor Who specials. Now that doesn't mean that I don't watch all the new Christmas specials that we see on the TV, its really the only one that I personally look forward to the most and compared to the other Christmas specials that we get here in the UK, its more worth my time than the others. So anyway, let's take a look at this special which somehow has Santa (played by Simon Pegg's partner in crime, Nick Frost) in it:
So the episode begins with Clara waking up to a sound coming from her roof. She goes to investigate and meets a man in a big jolly red suit (though it would've been green if Coca-Cola never made Santa red) and two other men who look like elves (the North Pole kind, just to avoid confusion) as well as a crashed sleigh and some flying reindeers. To make matters even more confusing for Clara, the Doctor arrives on the Tardis who takes Clara to the North Pole where they meet a group of scientists who are studying some kind of face huggers and somehow, only the red suit man can stop them. The Doctor suspects that something is up and tries to determine what is happening before something really bad happens.
Now I think its fair to say that since Steven Moffat took on the role of head writer for Doctor Who, he's managed to make each Christmas special capture the magic and fantasy elements for what makes a great Christmas Special and Last Christmas is no exception. Its contains references to films that take place around Christmas (including Die Hard) and while the plot may feel like the Alien films (which one of the characters mentions, making the Doctor think that its racist to call a film that name), its done in quite a clever way to make it so that its still about killing people, but instead of doing that in order to survive and create more aliens, these face huggers put their victims into a dream state as they slowly kill their victims. I wouldn't say its the best Christmas special out there, but its not often that you see The Doctor with a character who is legend (I mean he met Robin Hood and now Santa Claus who are both regarded as legends) so that was really worth it. I think compared to last year's one, it could've been better. But for what we get, I'm happy and I hope we see more of these in the near future. 8/10
