Valentine's Day Special - Top 25 All Time Favourite Couples

Well it goes without saying that today is a day where all you love birds out there, will spend the day together away from your day to day things and its nice for something like that to happen every year, even if its just for one day. Now this year, I will aim to do more of these special day/holiday posts, though keep in mind that I'm only doing holidays that occur in the UK which is where I live so, sorry those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving as well as many others. So that out of the way, let's talk about couples. Now the couples on this list are those that aren't real but rather seen in fictional works like films, video games, comics and nerd culture which as you guys know, are the things that I cover on this blog. It has been done many times before by others, but for me, this is a first. So let's have a look and see which couples are the best in my eyes (and be aware that there will be some spoilers on this list so be prepared and one couple per franchise):

25 - Mario & Princess Peach (Super Mario)
So for a very long time, Nintendo always decided to have nearly every Mario game played the same way where Mario is tasked with rescuing Peach from Bowser or some other known force of evil and often, it would be Mario doing the legwork where Peach just sits there waiting to be rescued with little to nothing to do and it became quite boring after a while, having to play the same scenario over and over again. But something that Nintendo don't do in their own games that their acquired developers do, is that these developers actually make Peach more useful. She helps Mario to find her and has even assisted Mario on many occasions. In the Smash Bros. games, it proved that despite getting captured all the time, she can look after herself so why she doesn't do that in the games, no one really knows. But anyway, at the end of the day, Mario does what he does best, saves the princess and hopes to get a kiss out of it (and maybe more than just that). They are in my eyes, a very cute couple and even if Peach is more useless than Mario, and least she makes up for it in some form.

24 - Anna & Kristoff (Frozen)
Now Disney are known to do love right, but often it becomes very boring and nowadays, we expect couples to have something that makes them better than just in love and from Disney's more recent films, we get one in the form of Anna and Kristoff from Frozen. In this case, Anna goes on a quest to get her sister back home before winter dooms them all and along the way, she meets Kristoff. A guy who just wants to contribute to society any way he can and does so in helping Anna find her sister. However, even though Anna has already declared her love to someone else, we know for a fact that Kristoff would always be the one for her just because of how helpful he is to her cause and that this is a couple who definitely have feelings for each other, but always deny that to each other for most of the film, until its climax and that the sort of thing that I like with couples. They have feelings for each other, but never express until the most unexpected time of the film and that's great.

23 - Captain America & Black Widow (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
So in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you have about 4 or 5 couples in it. You have Tony & Pepper in Iron Man, Bruce & Betty in The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Jane in Thor (though sometimes it feels like its Thor & Loki that share a love in each other) and Star Lord & Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. But that then leaves Captain America and out of Agent Carter and Black Widow, I went with the latter. This is because that throughout The Winter Solider, Black Widow keeps suggesting ideas for possible romance options for Cap, but throughout the film, its made clear to everyone that these two are made for each other. I mean the actors actually make these kick ass characters cute, thus making them a cute couple and even though Black Widow mentions all these love options, in the end, she shows that she has feelings for the Cap and so they could very well make a couple even if its more of an ally sort of thing and I like it.

22 - Shepard & all his/her love interests (Mass Effect)
This can be seen as cheating, but I don't care. So in most video games, love is never really explored as much as it needs to be and this was the case until Mass Effect came along and changed all that. Despite the war against the Reapers, Shepard will always need time to be with those that he/she loves and he/she always has the choice to be with someone or not. It could be another human or even aliens and while the first game did spark some controversy over that, there is no denying that Shepard will always need someone in his/her life whether it be a human, an asari, a turian, a quarian, a drell or even the long extinct, but somehow it survived prothean. It is interesting to see how Shepard handles these love options (especially in a same sex or alien relationship), but its even more interesting to see these characters in a more emotional level than before because even though some of them are tough, many of them have a side to them that you don't ever see until you make love to them and that is a great way of seeing some of these fan favourite characters.

21 - Buzz Lightyear & Jessie (Toy Story)
So in the Toy Story films, there are 2 couples that seem to be going on. There's one in the form of Woddy and Bo Peep (which has since been gone off, due to the latter being retired as a character) and the other in the form of Buzz and Jessie. These two are clearly in love and this shows by how nervous Buzz gets in front of her and even more so in the third film where their relationship is pushed to the limit where Buzz is turned evil, then goes into Spanish mode and then reverts back to his old self, only to then join hands with Jessie and Woody in the incinerator (which I am one of a handful which didn't cry at, but was like WTF?!), before being saved by the 3 aliens, after which, their relationship is back in full swing with Buzz's Spanish mode still there in some form which makes Jessie warm up to him even more. I think in all honesty, this is a relationship that uses the typical kinds of people with Jessie being cute and hot damsel in distress and Buzz being the heroic and muscular man that he can be and all those things is why I like them.

20 - Shrek & Fiona (Shrek)
The Fairy Godmother was proven wrong when she said that ogres don't live happily ever after because in the case of Shrek and Fiona, they do. They are very similar in that they both have all known elements of an ogre. They're green, they stink, they're rude (both words and the noises they make) and of course, they are like onions because they have layers. The first film established the characters, eventually leading to the two getting married, the second film showed them as a likable couple who can easily fall in love and can easily forgive each other, the third film I guess their family got expanded while the film showed that they can kick ass as much as they are likable and the fourth film showed that they are still in love even if its in a parallel dimension. They are among the most likable couples that there is and there is nothing quite like them.

19 - Lenny & Carl (The Simpsons)
OK let's get something straight here. In the show, Lenny and Carl are always seen together. Its never told in the show about if they are a couple or not, but it has always been hinted over the course of this long past its prime show. They are inseparable and its obvious that Homer's best buddies share a bond of some sort. It may never be said in the show if they are truly a couple or not, but we can all dream and there are always these little references in the show that may hint to it. I mean it was either Homer and Marge or these two, but I felt these two are the most unique of couples even if they never show it, and its always great to make all these different theories about whether they are truly together  romantically or not.

18 - Jessica & Roger Rabbit (Who Framed Roger Rabbit?)
Roger is one lucky rabbit to have someone like Jessica. I mean yeah, many people regard his wife as one of the hottest animated women out there, but to me, she is hot, but I've seen hotter women (though this is after Jessica mind you so yeah). Anyway, so Roger may not be the kind of person that Jessica would fall in love with, but throughout the film, she does everything she can to protect the love of her life and seems to find Roger to be the only one that actually, truly cares about her and isn't there just to treat her like a trophy which no man should ever do with the love of their life. Yeah, Roger may just be a cartoon rabbit with all the usual cartoon traits about him, but with a girl like Jessica, he will do just fine as well his wife.

17 - Theodore & Samantha (Her)
The first time I watched Her was on a plane to somewhere and since watching it, it has become a personal favourite of mine. Its one of the more unique sci-fi films out there and nowadays, its very rare for us to get any film about a guy who falls in love with a computer operating system and the thing about this relationship, is that its unlike any other. Yeah we know Dexter fell in love with a computer in a similar fashion, but this one just isn't like that. You see Theodore from what I can see, is one of those nerds who decides to isolate himself from the rest of the world and when Samantha comes into his life, this relationship starts to become one of the most strangest yet best relationships that any person can have with an operating system. We've seen Raj from Big Bang Theory trying to form a relationship with Siri which didn't end well, so for a film to explore that concept is something that has only ever been done a handful of times and despite the idea of someone falling in love with an OS can be creepy, its done in a way that makes it not creepy, but still has the ups and downs of how this relationship can play out, if any of that makes sense.

16 - Nate and Elena (Uncharted)
I think its fair to say that every girl who plays Uncharted instantly falls in love with Nathan Drake because of his personality, his good looks and the fact that he cares for his allies. In the case of Elena, Nate worked alongside her to rescue his long time mentor Sully and stop the forces of evil from revealing a curse and put it onto the world. In the second game, we got Chole as the new eye candy for the men, but it was Elena who helped Nate in his quest to find the thing that Marco Polo found many years ago, though she was nearly killed as a result. In the third game, she helps Nate and Sully get to where they want to be and even returns the favour to Nate by restoring him to health and then buying him time to get going to rescuing his mentor Sully. If I'm being honest, these two are great. They have great chemistry, mutual respect for each other and on many occasions, have expressed their feelings for each other. Need I say more.

15 - Wall-E & EVE (WALL-E)
One of the most unusual of couples is one that involves a robot who's only job is to collect and store garbage (though has since surpassed his original programming and has developed a personality for himself) and a robot who came from outer space to find a sign of life, but instead finds this other robot and they form a friendship and more. Wall-E shows Eve that there has to be a bit of fun in your life despite Eve having the only goal of finding life. But it isn't until she goes into lockdown that Wall-E actually declares his love for her and throughout the course of the film's second half, Eve does the same by doing everything she can to protect Wall-E, even though that towards the end, he nearly loses everything because of his mistreatment by Auto on the ship. But needless to say, this is a love where words are not required and it only requires body language and that is really a great thing. Not every couple has the ability to speak so showing body language does that work for them and its great.

14 - Sheldon & Amy (The Big Bang Theory)
They first met when Howard and Raj got Sheldon on a dating website and ever since, they have been in their version of a relationship and when I say their version, its not like a typical relationship. Oh no, this one is very unusual and weird, but given that they are both weird, I will allow it. So in The Big Bang Theory, you have 4 couples. There's the on again off again Penny and Leonard, the married Bernadette and Howard, Raj and his many women after being able to surpass his mutisim and then of course these two. While Amy goes out with Sheldon to make her mum happy, Sheldon sees the whole thing as much like his friendship agreement, only with slight alterations. What's more is that their love for each other goes further in later seasons of the show where they kiss and do their own version of sex without actually having sex. Like with the above, they are a very unusual and weird couple, but that makes them interesting which is great.

13 - Batman & Catwoman (Batman cartoons, films, comics and video games)
Now I think its often that many people forget that despite Catwoman being a robber of sorts, she actually can be seen as an anti hero in many of her appearances. Batman on the other hand is a hero from the get go, but often has to do things that can make him an anti hero like killing certain people (though unlike Superman, he only does it if there is no other choice, especially if jail isn't an option). But despite all that, these two are clearly in love even if at times, they don't show it or the story makers make it so. In the cartoons, there is clearly love in the air between these two. In the live action films, Keaton's Batman is in love with Catwoman, but finds her to have a bit of a split personality problem, while Bale's Batman just has Catwoman as an ally with a relationship on the side. In the video games, Batman and Catwoman were in a relationship and they still have mutual respect for each other to the point that both would save each other from certain doom which they do in Arkham City. But whatever happens and despite their differences, its clear that Batman and Catwoman are in love, but its their different ways that make their relationship quite problematic.

12 - Hal & Lois (Malcolm in the Middle)
So before his Breaking Bad and Godzilla days, Bryan Cranston was just an ordinary family man called Hal who lived with his wife Lois and his 5 boys, one of them being Malcolm who as the show's title says, is the middle child. She shouts a lot while he just feels the need to agree with her and they do what they can to be the best at being parents as well as to look after themselves too. They say things in a sarcastic but forgiving manner, they forgive each other quite easily and a lot of the time, they can easily complement each other. But of course, handling 5 boys is no easy task so expect there to be arguments, shouting and lord knows what else. But hey, at least they love each other and that's what's important.

11 - The Doctor (David Tennant) & Rose (Doctor Who)
Now the Doctor has had plenty of companions who just love him and want to be with him, but it always doesn't end well. He's had a lot of people kissing him, but I think its fair to say that when he had Rose and was in his tenth (although now we can call it his eleventh) body, they were just in love with each other and to be fair, they both make a cute couple. They both look out for each other, they have plenty of fun and laughs, while always being able to assist those who need the help. They both made a queen not amused, they both proved that Daleks and Cybermen are not superior and they also shared what many are to believe is the best moment of all things sci-fi where they share one last scene together before they have to make an emotional goodbye. However, it was great that the Doctor was able to see Rose 2 more times before he regenerated, the first time giving Rose a human version of him in a parallel universe and the other time seeing her before she met the Doctor as his final trip before his regeneration. They will always be the best of buddies and more.

10 - Carl & Ellie (Up)
Now Up has been seen by many as one of Pixar's last great films until Cars 2 came around and for what it is, I enjoy it as well. The film has a focus on the old man Carl and he sees his deceased wife as his house. They once agreed to make a trip to Paradise Falls, but the ways of reality make it seem like an impossible task and to make matters worse, Ellie finds out that she can't have kids, but can still have Carl. In the end, she dies with her spirit being in their house and Carl eventually succeeds in their ultimate goal in life with the help of a few friends. Its not great when you find that you want to do something, but reality forces the things you want to do, to be put on hold for quite a long time and it shows here. These two wanted to get to Paradise Falls, but reality makes it impossible, but at least they try to make it possible and get through life as much as they can which if I'm being honest, is how all relationships should go. You choose to have one purpose in life and live life to the full as much as you can and just hope for the best.

9 - Fry & Leela (Futurama)
The show may be well over now, but everyone knows that the one thing that the show was good at, was relationships (among other things) and there was no better relationship than with the 20th Century delivery boy Fry and the accepted into society Cyclops Leela. Throughout the course of the show's original run, Fry did all he can to be Leela's love of her life, but failing at every turn. Then in the 4 feature length specials, Fry was able to finally be with Leela and then in the final seasons of the show, they declared their love for each other, shared a kiss and lord knows what else. It is a match that was made to be and I'm just glad that the show ended with them spending the whole episode together doing things and that is great. But who knows what their children will look like, if they ever have children.

8 - Belle & Beast (Beauty and the Beast)
So as I may have said previously, Disney are known for making great couples some of which have been regarded as the greatest couples of fiction ever. Among these is Belle and The Beast which just so happens to be the name of the film which in turn is based on a French fairy tale about a woman who seeks to find her father who has been captured by a beast and the woman chooses to be in the place of her father in order to save him and this starts something that will determine the fate of the beast whether the curse is lifted or not. Its pretty much the same story in the Disney film with songs in it. Its one of Disney's most critically acclaimed films and the couple is one of the best things about it. Belle is the one that helps the Beast be a better man and they fall in love, eventually leading to true loves kiss and the curse is broken and that's one of the best things here. They are in love and they prove that there is such a thing as true love, even if many people deny it.

7 - Aang & Katara (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Since watching the show, it has become my all time favourite Nickelodeon show and that's not only down to the animation, the story and the characters, but also the different relationships that are seen. There's love in the air all around and out of the few couples seen in the show, Aang and Katara was my favourite. Katara has been with Aang since the beginning and has always believed that he can be the best that he can be as well as having the power to save the world from the Fire Nation. But Aang never really had feelings for Katara until about mid way through season 2 where they both share a kiss and then it goes places from there. I know many of you who do fan art think that its Katara and Zuko, but in truth, this is who Katara really loves and they are quite a cute couple, not to mention that towards the end of the show, they become masters at what they can do with Katara mastering blood bending and water bending and Aang being a master of all the elements (well most of them anyway). They can both defend themselves and they are both in love even if it becomes questionable among fans.

6 - Gomez & Morticia (Addams Family)
Many people have put these two at the top of lists like this and if I'm being honest, I see no reason why they shouldn't be up there. I mean in my eyes, I've never really been a big fan of the Addams Family despite watching a good chunk of films and TV shows based on them, but I can defiantly say that Gomez and Morticia are both madly in love. I mean yeah, they do go quite overboard about how madly in love they both are, but its a couple like this that just shows how people who fall in love, need to play out. Its not always about the sex or the kids, there is much more to love than just those things and these two are an example of that. If I got more into the franchise then I'd consider putting them towards the very top, but as it is, I think its pretty respectable to at least be in the top 10.

5 - Mr. Incredible & Elastigirl (The Incredibles)
They fell in love during their prime, but following an act put down by the government, they were forced to hide in shadow. But as a result, they got themselves 3 kids and Mr. Incredible got a job in an office. It seems that they can handle things as superheroes and as regular American citizens just fine. Or so we think. Throughout the film, they have to fend for themselves and even their marriage falls into jeopardy, but only for a short time. They are great parents, great superheroes and certainly know how to kick ass and work as a team while also maintaining a seemingly perfect relationship.

4 - Simba & Nala (The Lion King)
Now we come to our first couple who are both animals. To begin with, Simba and Nala were just friends though Zazu hints that they will be destined to be together which they immediately dismiss. However, Zazu speaks the truth and it isn't until they fall in love where Simba builds up the courage he needs to reclaim what is rightfully his from Scar. Its important in any relationship that both people involved support the other in whatever they choose to do in life which is what makes this couple a great one. Support for one another is always important in any relationship and that's what makes these two great.

3 - Captain Jack Harkness & Ianto Jones (Torchwood)
Jack has slept with many men, women and aliens in his time from when Rose gave him immortality to when he became the Face of Boe (though how that happened, no one knows), but the one person he was with that lasted longer than just an episode or two was with the team's butler and general assistant Ianto Jones. In series 2, he would be there to comfort Jack in times when things aren't going according to plan (which to me, feels like every episode of the show pretty much, but I digress) and he did all he could to satisfy his needs, eventually leading to his demise when confronting the unseen Earth threatening alien in series 3. Its very obvious that anyone who meets Jack will no doubt get themselves in trouble, danger and in life threatening situations, but Ianto was able to survive for so long which made him a great match for Jack. Need I say more.

2 - Sora & Kairi (Kingdom Hearts)
While it has so far not directly been said if they are in love or not, Sora is one of those people who will do anything to protect those he loves which in turn Kairi does as well to a certain extent. Sora has battled many foes to be with Kairi and has done well to do so. He's even fought alongside her and she was able to protect him when he turned into a Heartless. Kairi may be one of the seven princesses of heart, but now that we know she's a keyblade wielder much like with Sora, we know that they can both look after themselves well and that through everything, there is definitely a connection there with them. I mean it is the heart of Kairi that Sora chooses to seek out and that's what makes them feel close and we know that there is love there. A love for friends and more.

Now as always, here are a few honourable mentions though because there are really no pages that talk about the characters as couples, no links this time:

Link & Zelda - Haven't really played the games enough to consider them a couple, but there is some connection there.

Lois & Superman - While I like them together, they are possibly the most boring couple you could ever meet.

Ezio & Sofia - Ezio is a ladies man, there is no denying that. But I just think a guy in his 50s dating a woman who is much younger than him, is just too creepy for me.

And of course, there are so many couples out there, but I can only put in 25, but yeah. Now onto my number one choice and believe me, even I wasn't sure of them myself when I did this list:

1 - Chell & Companion Cube (Portal)
Yeah I couldn't really find any official image so all credit goes to the person who did this fanart. It looks great. Anyway, so of all the couples on this list, this one is the most unusual, but when you hear me out, it can make sense. Thourghout the course of the Portal games, the one thing that keeps Chell sane and positive is the Companion Cube which makes her fall in love with it and just tells her that despite the robots that are GLaDOS and Wheatley, its not all bad and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Now how does she fall in love with a cube is anyone's guess, but its this kind of love that tells you that things may look bad, but its not all bad and that's what's important here. While I will admit that this is a more unusual couple than others, there is some kind of love here and that's really all I can say.

Have a happy Valentines Day to all you love birds out there and those of us who feel lonely, don't worry, there is someone for you out there. You just need to look.

Movie Review - Inside Out 2

I guess a sequel to the first makes sense here. I mean, for the most part, this franchise is all about the subject of growing up and with ...
