Video Game Review - Unravel

As most of you know, I have never really been a fan of EA's work due to their "copy and paste" method used in their sports games, the similarities Battlefield has to Call of Duty (but to EA's credit, at least the graphics look better) and really just what I hear about their business practises and their poorly executed press conferences where they show things that nobody wants to see (well for the most part anyway). But saying that, EA have been able to give us some decent games even if they only publish such games. The games made by BioWare and PopCap are just some of the many games that are great to play even if they only publish the game and that's it. And for most video game companies, they would at times, take the risk of making new IPs and to help publish and distribute indie games, sometimes with success and other times not so much. Today, we're going to talk about Unravel. A game that was shown at E3 last year and in my personal opinion, reminded me of a time where E3 was all about developers showing off thier work that they spent months, years or even decades making and hope that you the player, enjoy them which is really what E3 should always be about every year. And I have to give credit to the man who showed this off, I mean, he was shaking, he was nervous, but was excited too. So let's see if his work paid off:

So you control this character called Yarny who as his name implies, starts out as a ball of yarn, but eventually takes on a more human form. The colour of which Yarny uses, is a symbol of love and goes on a journey of discovery where typically small things in life, become large. Now I think some of you may be wondering about the line that Yarny has behind him. Well in addition to using it to solve puzzles and keep you going on your journey, Yarny as the name of the game implies, will unravel to reveal a metal frame and as such, need to have its yarn refilled over time by finding yarn balls on your journey.

And really that's all there is. Its not often that a company like EA would publish an indie game and for what its worth, the risk has paid off. Its not a perfect game by any means, but given that the developer's other work was not very good, this one really is a good one. However the whole idea of a yarn character is nothing new as shown by Kirby's Epic Yarn and Yoshi's Woolly World by Nintendo as well as LittleBigPlanet by Sony. But that's not a bad thing by any means. Its a good game, can't say any more than that, but EA, I think its time to drop Origin and go back to releasing games on Steam because to be honest, having to use Origin just to play EA games on a PC, is too much hassle compared to Steam. 9/10
