Around this time last year, we lost a music legend in the form of David Bowie. At the time of doing my tribute post to him and Alan Rickman who passed away at the same time, the only thing I was able to talk about, is my all time favourite song of his. Well its been a year and I've finally been able to watch a film of his. It was either going to be The Man Who Fell To Earth or this film as I personally would say those are his best films. And so in the end, I went for the film that most of us nerds would remember him for doing, Labyrinth. So let's get to it:
So we meet this 15 year old girl called Sarah (played by a young Jennifer Connelly) who starts to rehearse this play, but soon realises that she is late for babysitting her baby brother Toby and when she sees him in possession of her teddy bear, she wishes for him to be taken away by the goblin king who is in this play she is rehearsing for. And then for the rest of the film, Sarah gets tasked by the Goblin King Jareth (played by Bowie) to solve his Labyrinth in 13 hours to save her brother, or otherwise her brother will stay with him and so she goes to do just that.
It is a fun film that makes full use on what's on offer from Jim Henson's Creature Shop, giving us some weird and obscure characters as the film progresses. Its very mysterious, full of originality which we don't get much of these days and its the perfect film to remember David Bowie for as he does a really good job of being the villain. Of course its not perfect, but for a film that is mostly practical effects over old CGI, its good. Really good. 9/10
