Random Movie Review - The Secret Life of Pets

There have been numerous films about pets that have been made over the years and for the most part, they have had a pretty mixed reception. Some have been great and sweet while others either tried too hard or made the animals have voices which isn't a bad thing per say, but it's better with a good script and writing than bad ones. In a world where the animation department is dominated by Disney and DreamWorks, there are still a few animated films that manage to top or be just as good as the films said companies have made. So today we look at another pet film which feels very familiar to a certain Disney animated classic that was loosely based on a Charles Dickens novel, but decides to go in its own path and as a pet lover who's family have a dog, this felt right up my ally. So grab those leads, get those treats and have those poo bags at the ready as we go into The Secret Life of Pets:

So we're in present day New York city where we meet a group of pets and their owners. The owners are often out at work so these pets decide to hang out. One of these pets is a dog called Max (funny considering my dog is called max and has similar colours to this dog despite not being a lurcher. Anyway, he is voiced by Louis C.K.) who loves the life he has until his owner decides to adopt a bigger dog than him called Duke (voiced by Eric Stonestreet). At first these two hate one another, but when a dog sitter misplaces them on a walk, they soon learn that they must look after one another and find their way home before animal control finds them. Plus they must also take on a group of abandoned pets who want nothing more than revenge on mankind for how they have been treated. All the while Max's buddies team up with some other domesticated pets to find him and bring him home.

Its a very colourful film and well animated at that which I expect nothing less from the makers of the Despicable Me films. Its also well acted and the film accurately depicts the pets and how they behave quite well. I like it when film makers take the time to research these things before making the film. It makes for a better film and a very entertaining one at that. And I hear that there's going to be a sequel. I will be looking forward to that. 9/10
