Movie Review - Dunkirk

So I haven't talked about any historical films in a while so I thought it be time to talk about Nolan's new film. Regarded as one of his best works as well as one of the best war films of all time, its time we talked about Dunkirk. Now fortunately with the arrival of IMAX in my home town, it was a perfect time to watch this and it being in IMAX made it feel like I was in the action. So let's have a look at it:

So the film's plot focuses on 3 storylines detailing what happened in the Dunkirk evacuation during World War II. One of them covers one week on the land and focuses on a British soldier (played by Fionn Whitehead) who helps a solider of unknown origin (played by Aneurin Barnard) bury someone before trying to get a wounded soldier on board a vessel before it gets shot down where they then save another soldier (played by Harry Styles, formerly of boy band One Direction) and they together find a way off the beach of Dunkirk. Storyline number 2 which covers one day and on the sea, sees a father and son duo (the father played by the BFG himself Mark Rylance and the son played by Tom Glynn-Carney) setting a course to Dunkirk on their boat to help get the survivors out with some help from the son's teenage friend (played by Barry Keoghan) and they witness and encounter some extraordinary events along the way. Finally, the last storyline which covers one hour in the air, focuses on three Spitfires (2 of the pilots of which being played by Tom Hardy and Jack Lowden) who attempt to provide air support to the troops, taking down as many bombers as possible with varying results. All storylines are interwoven to create a non-linear narrative with Kenneth Branagh's character overseeing the events that take place throughout.

So one thing most of us reviewers and critics have to keep in mind is that these historical films are largely just adaptations. Historical accuracy varies on all the films and its often that most of them will have some fictional aspect for the purpose of making a great film. I don't know much about the evacuation personally, but if war veterans who saw this are saying its accurate to some extent, then I will accept it like that. But overall it is a great film that's very intense right from the start, has very minimal dialogue, is well acted by everyone (even all the newcoming actors like Styles) and definitely worth being seen in IMAX in order to get the feeling of being part of the action. And I can say that I found little to no flaws with this film so it gets a perfect 10/10.

Movie Review - Inside Out 2
