Video Game Review - Kingdom Come: Deliverance

So after having done Saints Row and Dead Island, Deep Silver now take on medieval times in their latest game by some new kids on the block known as Warhorse Studios. The big question people want to know is if these developers can actually make a game with graphics that are up to today's standard. Because otherwise, they are no match for the power of other big games out there. But as any gamer would know, graphics aren't everything when it comes to gaming. It's also about the gameplay, if it works and can it be a fun and enjoyable experience that can be played for hours on end. I personally have high hopes that this can give us great graphics while also an enjoyable gaming experience overall. I mean it is set in times where swords are slaying, battles are fought and all sorts of other medieval stuff so this should be fun, right? Well let's have a look:

Set in 1403, war has begun in the Kingdom of Bohemia. On the orders of a corrupt king, mercenaries start raiding the mining village of Skalitz which is said to have a major source of silver. One of the survivors vows to seek vengeance for the death of his family and somehow gets involved with a plot to give Bohemia to its rightful heir to the throne while seeking the vengeance that he desires. So right off the bat, the game begins moments before the attack on Skalitz. You play from a first person perspective and depending on how you act, your reputation will either increase or decrease from time to time. The game uses a non-class system that let's you take on a number of roles such as thieves or bards as well as their hybrids. Kind of like with other games, you can equip armour via a system that assigns pieces of clothing and armour to certain slots. As it is with these games, everything you carry (equipped or not) will wear and tear over time and your character will need to sleep and eat to survive (unlike games like Fable III where they say you need to eat and sleep, but you don't need to). All this plus a big open world to explore with NPCs and their daily routines.

So with all that taken into account, I'd say that the graphics are an improvement over Deep Silver's earlier work and I give credit to Warhouse Studios for funding this game via Kickstarter. Its the best way to do it and you know you are doing it right when the campaign succeeds. Lots of people have praised the game for its originality, story and historical detail and as someone who has a keen interest in medieval times, I have to agree with the third one. The story is more or less your typical avenging parents story and as for originality, it does have plenty of originality in almost all aspects of the game. Most games like these would most often add a fantasy element, but not this time which is where the originality comes in. But aside from all that, the gameplay is great. The voice acting could be better and there is clearly a lot of bugs and glitches that need fixing (which will no doubt be sorted out over time). But its an overall good game and let's hope its not the only game with originality that we get this year. 8/10
