So maybe I should have reviewed this in the same week I reviewed the second film. Though I was pretty busy at the time so I figured now would be the best time to talk about the game. So as many of you know, Disney no longer publishes games themselves as a result of the sudden discontinuation of Disney Infinity (likely due to the production costs of figures as well as the premium line being pretty expensive). Since then, much of their games released for PC and game consoles have been published via third party publishers such as EA (who publish Star Wars games to the core gaming market while Disney retain the right to give the license out to other developers for the casual market), Capcom (who made many Disney games back in the early days of gaming and have since bought them back for Steam and also do the Marvel VS Capcom series), Square Enix (who make and publish the Kingdom Hearts games which use elements and characters from Disney as well as their own properties like Final Fantasy), Bandai Namco (who have made and published a few random games with Disney properties) and finally WB Games who we are looking at today. So in the case of WB Games, the Disney games they publish are ones that are LEGO based (via TT Games) and a few of the tie in/companion games to upcoming and recently released Disney films. Today we look at the tie in game to Incredibles 2 which has both the first and second game in there with LEGO flare all around. So let's see if its as incredible as one would like:
The game starts off by playing out the second film before going to the past and playing out the first film. Both films have been heavily altered to make it more kid friendly as well as to account for the game being able to play with up to two players. For the most part, the game only loosely follows the plots of the films, but still feeling like we are playing them out without either being completely different from their film counterparts. All the usual elements of TT developed LEGO video games make a return such as minikits, stud bars, gold bricks, side missions, character customisation and just smashing everything and everyone in sight as well as the occasional need to build something and use a character's ability to get through puzzles and tight spots. Returning from LEGO City Undercover is super builds which in this game has the player find objects known as Incredibricks which can be used to create models in levels and in the open world environment of the two closely connected cities of Municiberg and New Urbem. New to the series meanwhile is crime waves in which the supers must go to a part of the open world map to take on a series of quests to stop the crime wave, largely culminating in a showdown against the villain responsible for the wave of crime which can be a villain from the films or a completely original one.
In recent years, I've come to find that most of the tie in games released nowadays are actually pretty good and could be seen as better than those that came before them with LEGO The Incredibles being no exception to that. It's a fun superhero game that gives kids a more child friendly version to the otherwise dark and mature films that Disney and Pixar gave us while also being unrestricted to what it can do and does its own thing to make the game an enjoyable experience for everyone. It like most of Pixar's films, has Easter eggs a plenty and even includes some guest appearances from other Pixar characters like Woody, Flik and Merida. Its a great superhero game and one that should not be missed, but make sure you watch the second Incredibles film first before playing this as that film is played out first in the game. 9/10
