Yeah I know. Its yet another take on the story where Superman battles Doomsday. But this time it seems to be more based on the original comic version (though using well known JLA members rather than what was used in the original comic) rather than being a completely different story but still using the famous and heartbreaking fight. So Superman to many is one of the greatest superheroes that ever lived. Came from a destroyed alien planet and was welcomed on Earth and became its savior as well as a symbol for hope thus keeping his family's legacy alive. But what happens when he's put in a scenario that could very well be his downfall. That's what this film tells us. So let's see how this fight plays out:
So the JLA continue their crime fighting activities while Superman (reprised by Jerry O'Connell) goes through a series of events that include becoming a icon for Metropolis and showing off his Kryptonian rocket to Lois Lane (voiced by Rebecca Romijn) via an interview for the Daily Planet amongst other things. STAR labs begins to analyse some fragments that were of Apokoliptian and Earth elements before a meteorite hits Earth containing a monster that kills anything and everything in its path. While the JLA manage to keep the beast occupied, the beast manages to single handily defeat them all leaving Superman to be their last hope. But this fight may very well be his last.
This is likely the sixth time I've seen or read the fight between Superman and Doomsday and to be honest, this is possibly the best one I've seen. Not only does it remain largely faithful to the original story, but it also modernises it and has us witness other heroes take Doomsday on without any restrictions on the violence, the blood and the costume rips. It also manages to throw in a few nods to some of the most iconic moments in the original story such as Superman's cape being used as a flag (as seen above), Lois Lane cradling a defeated Superman (which I can say as the film title is a big giveaway to how the film will end) and Doomsday starting in a body suit, but slowly revealing his true form over the course of the film (via damage from the heroes). It's a fantastic, but heartbreaking story and I can't wait for its sequel (coming out next year). 10/10
