Well Netflix had another Japanese film based on a manga which itself became an anime so I thought to check it out. Now while I haven't seen all of the Bleach anime, I have watched enough to be able to see this film. And unlike some Japanese films I have come across on Netflix, this one has an English dub which is good for me. But considering that there is now a Bleach film, its only a matter of time before we get a One Piece and Naruto film, animated or otherwise. But anyway let's look at Bleach and see if non fans can enjoy it as much as its dedicated fanbase:
The film is a retelling of how Ichigo (physically played by Sota Fukushi and voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch from the anime) an ordinary teenager, somehow manages to see and communicate with ghosts and how he became a Soul Reaper with assistance from his so called teacher Rukia (physically played by Hana Sugisaki and voiced by Cassandra Lee Morris from the anime). To begin with Ichigo reluctantly tries to balance his role as a Soul Reaper with his ordinary life but eventually comes to accept his role when he learns about Rukia's vulnerability over her superiors.
Just like any film based on a manga/anime, this one is definitely tailor made for the fans. However unlike most live action films based on manga/anime, it manages to keep things simple for non-fans and therefore is easily accessible for such. As well as that, it remains faithful to the source material while also attempting to do its own thing to make a good film (because as we all know, not everything can translate well into a film). I guess the only negative I have with it is that just like with most 3D animated or live action Japanese things, the dubbing doesn't always match up which can be annoying for some, but not so much for everyone else. 8/10
