AC1: Random Movie Review - The Man Who Invented Christmas

So we begin the festive month of December by talking about that over adapted story that we hear non stop. A Christmas Carol has been done to death far too many times. We all know the story, we know that its about the spirit of what Christmas is supposed to be (and not what all the shops out there think it is). But at least for the most part, none of us really ever knew how it came about until the book that influenced this very film came out. Why was Scrooge the way he was. What did it all mean and so many other questions that one can hope this film (as well as the book its based on) can answer. So let's get our "bah humbugs" out and get right to it:

Set in the early 1840s approximately two years following his success with Oliver Twist, we meet Charles Dickens (played by the mind bending mutant from Legion and the live action Beast from Beauty and the Beast Dan Stevens) who after the failure of his last three books is in financial trouble. In a desperate attempt to get a successful book written, Charles goes about writing A Christmas Carol in which he interacts with elements found in London and the fictional characters deep within the book to get the inspiration for it, though at the price of having a strained relationship with his family.

When it really comes down to it, no one really knew how much of an impact that Charles Dickens had on Christmas. The book he wrote really showed what the holiday means and its had a lasting impact ever since. So much so that we get countless versions of the story adapted in films and other stuff. As for the film, its pretty good. All the cast (of which there are a few big names) play their parts well and give us probably the most original version of A Christmas Carol though in a way showing us Charles Dickens directing it as if it was a film minus all the things we have to make films today. A very good film indeed. 9/10
