AC18: Random Movie Review - Free Birds

I realised after watching this film that it has nothing to do with Christmas aside from one little nod at the beginning. So instead its one of the rare Thanksgiving films out and not the most perfect one either. So many of you may know of Reel FX as being the animation company behind The Book of Life and this film came before it. It was their first theatrically released film and has a very interesting cast choice too. So let's see if this film celebrates thanksgiving the way it should do or is best not to be thankful for:

The film begins with some narration from a turkey called Reggie (voiced by that smooth talking member of the Frat Pack, Owen Wilson) who manages to figure out something common in all traditions; food is always involved. Warning his flock about their impending doom is to no avail and is thrown out in an attempt for his flock to save themselves. But in a surprise twist of fate, Reggie is instead pardoned and gets relocated to Camp David where he quickly adjusts to a life where he does nothing but relax and watch Mexican TV. But when another turkey called Jake (voiced by Haymitch and Beckett himself, Woody Harrelson) tells him about "The Great Turkey" and that Reggie is destined to save Thanksgiving, Reggie reluctantly goes along with the whole thing and the pair go about finding a time machine to go back to the first Thanksgiving and take turkeys off the menu once and for all.

I know the film makers had their good intentions with this film, but to be honest its not as great as trailers make it out to be. The ending although resolves the overall goal that Reggie had, just feels very unnerving and this comes from someone who doesn't even celebrate Thanksgiving. The film also acts as if the turkeys are America's national bird and really force that down our throats. But in truth, I believe its the eagle. The animation is pretty much what DreamWorks were like before How to Train Your Dragon came out which in other words means that its pretty cheap and not in the best sense of it. I appreciate the enthusiasm that I'm sure the film makers went through to get this film made. But it just misses the mark big time. A bit more work could have been done and it would have been a much better film and I'm glad that Reel FX's next film would actually be a whole lot better than this film. Not really a film that I will be giving thanks for I'm afraid. 6/10

Movie Review - Inside Out 2
