Random Movie Review - All is Lost

Its not often that you would get films like this. Films which have a very small cast and little to no dialogue. So then comes Robert Redford who is known for appearing in a number of indie films as well as a few big blockbuster films who somehow agreed to do a film where he doesn't do much talking and is the only cast member. Well this should be interesting, but it could also be seen as possibly the most original film in recent years as far as how it was made is concerned. And rightly so as it was nominated for several awards and won at least four of them with Redford taking home a "Best Actor" award. So let's see if all really is lost:

The film begins with some opening monologue from Redford (whom due to being credited as Our Man despite not been given another name, I'm just going to call Robert Redford for the rest of the review) and the troubles of piloting a ship and losing all hope that anyone would save him. The film then cuts to a few days later where Redford notices his ship has collided with a shipping container and goes about trying to get rid of the excess water while also patching up the hole that the container has made. As he continues his course on the Indian Ocean, more problems arise which leads to Redford trying to save and salvage his ship, but must ultimately abandon it in the hopes that he will get saved by someone or die trying even if all hope is lost.

This I got to say is a very good film. It shows what I've been told is an accurate portrayal of how ship captains go about saving their vessel though due to the one cast member and the lack of dialogue, you would need a lot of concentration as a result of that. But apart from that, its a great film acted out well by a great actor and its also possibly one of a few films that you'd think wouldn't work out so well and yet it does brilliantly. 9/10
