Random Movie Review - Ninja Scroll

When people are asked what are the greatest and most influential anime films out there, most of us would say films like Akira, Ghost in the Shell and the majority of Studio Ghibli's films. And one of those so called great and influential films is Ninja Scroll. A film that has been praised for its animation and action scenes while like Akira and Ghost in the Shell has also made adult orientated anime very popular in the western part of the world. So let's see how much of an impact this film gave the world as we know it:

Set in Edo period Japan, the Yamashiro clan mine for gold with the intent on using it to buy advanced Spanish weaponry and overthrow the government. They enlist the help of The Toyotomi Shogon of the Dark for protection and a supernatural ninja group who call themselves the Eight Devils of Kimon to kill innocent people in order to keep their mining operation a secret. A mercenary called Jubei Kibagami (voiced in the English dub by Dean Elliot) sets out to investigate and battle the Eight Devils before more murders occur and the plot to overthrow the government is stopped.

This film is pretty dang good. Its animation and action scenes are something to behold especially in the time it initially came out. Some scenes are quite disturbing and may put some people off. But overall its a good film that is worthy of being influential as well as crucial in making anime overall popular in the western parts of the world. Had I watched this before doing my list of all time favourite anime shows and films, it would have been included somewhere on the list. 9/10
