Random Video Game Review - Subnautica

Kicking off the spooky month of October (which may or may not end with the end of civilisation as we know it), let's take a look at a game that has been pretty popular with YouTubers for a good few years. Subnautica may not be a horror or dark fantasy game as is what most Halloween media tends to be. But it does have some survival elements and a whole array of monsters to battle that may be just as scary as our uncertain future (yes I will try not to be too political in these posts. I'm sorry). So let's literally dive in and explore this underwater world:

Set at a point in the twenty-second century in which humans have colonised to other planets, a ship known as the Aurora is sent out to the planet 4546B in an attempt to find out what happened to the ship known as Degasi and to also construct a high speed space travel structure known as a Phasegate. But upon arrival at the planet, the Aurora crash lands due to some unknown force and the player is the only survivor. As the only survivor, you are tasked with trying to figure out what happened to the Degasi and the crew while also trying to find a way home. Although the game has this story, its heavily implied that you just explore the world that is presented to you at your own pace and just try to survive any danger that presents itself to you. As with most survival games, you can build bases, collect resources, make tools, use submarine like vessels and interact with the wildlife on the planet. Despite largely being set underwater, the game also has two explorable islands and a day and night cycle which obviously affects gameplay and your surroundings. We get four difficulty modes which are your traditional modes, but with some features disabled in each one depending on which one is used. VR is also supported here as well which is good news and a win for the first person video games.

I can certainly see why this game is popular with YouTubers. It is a lot of fun and a truly beautiful game to explore and fully embrace. Well presented, makes great use of the underwater areas and to an extent, its pretty fun to play. A shame that the story is a bit bleak and just your typical survival story. But otherwise its a great game with some horror elements so definitely worth your time indeed. 9/10
