TV Season Review - Cursed

Oh Frank Miller. A guy who has done some good things, but most will know as that guy that according to many Internet reviewers, has a thing for boobs and while having made great comic books and films, he also did many Batman stories which the majority of are just not that great (the only exceptions being The Dark Knight Returns and Year One). Then we also have Tom Wheeler. A guy whose work is often either rejected, cancelled or retooled into something else. So based on those things, my expectations for Cursed which is based on one of their own works, was low. But I was surprised by what I saw. It may be like Game of Thrones in a few different ways, but less of the incest and more of the bloody violence which is actually pretty sick (the disgusting way of course). So let's see if we will get "cursed" by watching this (see what I did there?):

The series overall is a reimagining of the Arthurian legend but told from the perspective of one Nimue (played by Katherine Langford) who is said to be the destined yet tragic Lady of the Lake with magical powers. She forms an alliance with the mercenary Arthur (played by Devon Terrell) who is on a quest to find the powerful sorcerer Merlin (played by Gustaf Skarsgard) and an ancient sword. Her journey will be one that makes her a symbol of courage and rebellion against a corrupt king and his sadistic so-called "religious" allies known as the Red Paladins.

Lots of themes that this show carries over the course of ten hours. Such themes include the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, wars that are seemingly senseless and going about standing your ground against impossible odds. While some episodes show all those things and more really well, there are times when it can get a bit much as far as how real it can get to our reality which of course is surprising from a fantasy series. It's an enjoyable ten hours worth spent with good acting from otherwise largely unknown actors and some great visual effects and battle scenes. As I said, it does remind me a bit of Game of Thrones and who knows. Maybe it will be the new popular adult themed fantasy series going forward (though admittedly not as mature as that show). 8/10

Movie Review - Inside Out 2
