Yeah, this is kind of cheating a bit if it's a film, but there are reasons it's being reviewed on a Tuesday. You see like with that Constantine film, this film was originally a web series but remade to act like it was a film. But like with Batman Ninja, it is considered separate from DC's line of direct to home media animated films. The web series launched on CW Seed in the USA (something of which we don't get here in the UK) and was eventually retooled and released as a film to the rest of the world. It's nice that both DC and Marvel are taking more risks than ever before to have all their characters be seen on screen and for a wider audience instead of always in the comic books. So let's see what Slade has been up to in his series turned film:
We start by having a little origin story which shows how Slade (voiced by DC veteran Michael Chiklis) got his abilities which came from an experimental drug and became the mercenary we know as Deathstroke. Slade falls in love and while aware of having a son (voiced by Griffin Puatu), his second love gives birth to a daughter (voiced by Faye Mata) who would later be recruited into an organization called H.I.V.E. Years go by and soon enough, the USA becomes threatened by H.I.V.E. which prompts a reluctant Slade to team up with his first love to stop them in order to save both his children and the United States as a whole.
Unsurprisingly, this is a pretty good series turned film. The animation is good, the characters are great and while the story does sound like your typical dysfunctional family type of story, it tries hard to not get burrowed into those tropes. The action is good too and I got to say it is about time this anti-hero got his own film or series and it's a good one too. 8/10
