Some of us are used to seeing games with genres that describe them perfectly. But then there is a genre called Metroidvania which sounds rather odd. This sort of genre is best described as a bunch of games that follow similar gameplay mechanics and game designs to the Metroid and Castlevania games. Think a mix of sci-fi with a bit or horror, first person shooting and a large quantity of action packed adventure. Which brings us to this game which is in the genre, became a thing following a successful Kickstarter and was made by the same people behind all those Worms games. So let's see what awaits us in this game:
The game is set in the fictional region of Cvstodia. Players play as a being known as the Penitent One, a mute character who is a knight who travels across the region in a pilgrimage. You basically explore the land while defeating many foes which appear in most areas. Players can attack with a sword or spells learned as the game progresses. Strategy is of course key in most of the battles you face in the game. Tears of Atonement act as in game currency which can be used to upgrade your stats and weapons as well as purchase things too. Lots of side quests involved, plenty of opportunities to do those upgrades, plenty of checkpoints and all the usual things that you get in most games.
My biggest problem with this game is it's got the usual tropes with most games with the only new thing being how they are laid out in keeping with the tone and setting of the game. Other than that, it's an alright game with good pixelated graphics and things that most of us will find hard to unsee or forget. Yep it's that kind of game. Not innovative as such, but one that people do like talking about and for good reason too. 7/10
