So its been a while since the last Studio Ghibli film I reviewed and I felt it was about time to get back into it. So most people would say that they don't technically count as a Disney owned company because they helped with the English dub (thanks in part to John Lasseter). But to me, I say that they do. I mean Disney themselves have never truly done any anime things but have come close to it in films like Big Hero 6 and the mother nature sequence in Fantasia 2000. So I guess its kind of nice that they could do something for a beloved Japanese animation company that at the time of writing this, may or may no longer be in business and it would be a real shame if it were the latter. I mean they have made so many great films with a few having won and be nominated some awards and this one is one of those films. So let's enter the weird but wonderful world of Studio Ghibli once more:
The film is about a milliner called Sophie (voiced by Emily Mortimer in the English dub) who encounters the titular young wizard Howl (voiced by Nolan Batman himself, Christian Bale) on her way to visiting her sister. She has become cursed to turn old and her encounter with Howl may be the thing that breaks her curse. All that in the midst of a war that Howl is trying to win for the king, but love may prevail in the end.
While a good film, there is an unpleasant sequence or two that may put people off from continuing the film. But overall its a good film about love and war with a bit of fantasy and sci-fi thrown in. Its not going to be a pleasant ride for everyone due to its themes and the fact that Hayao Miyazaki wanted it to do poorly in the western market (though in the end, it actually did pretty well). Good animation too and yeah its worth watching. 8/10
