Random Movie Review - Down with Love

You know thinking about it now, I should've saved this for Valentine's Day. Oh, well. Now I've seen a lot of films that star Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor. Some are great, but then there are a few that are not quite as good. In a week where I'll be reviewing two things that have at least something to do with sitcoms or comedy in general, this film finds itself being a homage to the no sex comedies of the 60s while also featuring elements and themes from some of the more recent ones (well up to the film's release year of course). The big question is does it work and that's what I intend to find out today in a film that stars Bridget Jones herself and young Obi-Wan Kenobi himself. Let's take a look:

Set in 1962, we are in New York where aspiring author Barbara Novak (played by Zellweger) sets out to present a book about how women should be free from the world of love and replace things like men with chocolate (yes it's as sexist as it sounds). But the place she presents it to just so happens to be run by men and unsurprisingly, they reject her book. But somehow she attempts to make contact with a guy who may be able to help her out, leading into a series of bizarre yet funny events revolving around her book and the reactions people had to it.

Comedy in general is known to be funny and can often lead into silly things that would eventually be of some importance later down the line. Zellweger and McGregor are not a good match here which may be intentional considering it's a homage and pokes fun and the good and bad things about 60s no sex comedies. But it has some funny moments and even musical moments too. Probably not a film I would want to see again, but it set out what it intended to do and did a decent job of it at least. 7/10
