Random Video Game Review - We Happy Few

A Clockwork Orange was a very controversial film. That no one can deny, but it certainly had influence on a lot of things even today. We Happy Few may be in a league of its own when compared to that film, but I certainly see the similarities between the two such as all the characters being British and being quite disturbed individuals. Some people wanted to play this while others wanted to avoid it all together. I played it and well this is what I thought:

Much like with Clockwork Orange, this game is set in an alternate historical timeline where Franklin D. Roosevelt was assassinated in 1933 which started a chain of events that forced the UK to fight the Germans alone in the World Wars that happened. But things happened and people started to use a drug called "joy", be forced to have a permanent smile and be confused with government propaganda. The game has you play as three different characters with each story intersecting each other over time. The game follows the style of stealth and survival being the main focus. The game is played from a first-person perspective and uses a lot of mechanics that are common in many games like this these days such as skill trees, side missions to go with main missions and finding weapons and other inventory items to help each character on their journey.

As well as A Clockwork Orange, I can also see a few things that BioShock fans will be familiar with (and perhaps that game series is a better comparison when thinking about it). Anyway, this game is OK. It's not very innovative, has a lot of technical issues despite being in Early Access for a long period of time and its representation of mental health is at least to me, a bit inaccurate. But does it have any redeemable qualities and the answer is... well a few, but not many. People will no doubt enjoy the similarities it has to the media I mentioned and if this was a game about the DC villain Joker, this would actually be his perfect heaven in a way. I am shocked that a game that was in Early Access for so long is still got bugs here and there. But its a decent game. Just not one I will be playing again any time soon. 6/10
