I honestly never thought that this franchise would ever make a return. But here we are many years later after Revelations and now we have a fourth film. A film that like Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Star Wars: The Force Awakens starts off as being like the first film. But surprisingly, it manages to do it's own thing after the first half. Didn't know what to expect going in, but let's take a pill of the blue or red variety and enter the Matrix once more:
Posing as Thomas Anderson, Neo (reprised by Keanu Reeves) has become a successful video game developer with his games being based on his past of which he has dreams of. He keeps running into someone who reminds him a lot of Trinity (reprised by Carrie-Anne Moss) and also struggles to figure out what's real and what isn't. But his life changes all over again when a being that is the embodiment of Morpheus (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) enters the fray, revealing that the world he lives in, may not be as real as he thought. And that his and Trinity's existence within may have something to do with it.
The film is actually a lot better than I thought it would be. The CGI that has dated the previous films, now looks more up to date as does the idea of balancing seriousness and humor. It's a fun ride with everyone playing their parts well. But I will admit, I nearly walked out when a scene came up that made out that the trilogy that The Matrix was at first, were all a dream. But that quickly changes so it's all good. A very well made film and a welcome comeback to the franchise that defined a genre. 8/10
