There are a lot of well known and creative authors out there. Some of them have gone on to have successful sales in their books and said books have also become huge film franchises. One such author is H.P. Lovecraft who, as far as I know, has yet to have any one of his books turned into film and/or TV franchises. But the video game world is wide awake with his creations, which includes a number of Cthulhu games and now this game. The guy is well known for his sci-fi, fantasy, horror and weird stories and this game is based on one of those stories. So let's take a look:
The game (which itself is inspired by the Lovecraft story At the Mountains of Madness) follows four scientists in their quest to challenge what is considered the limits of nature itself. They want to transcend human consciousness with the use of the titular Conarium device. The player controls one of the scientists, who awakens after some time of being out doing this experiment. With no sign of the other scientists, your goal is to figure out what happened and what happened to the character's colleagues, who at first seem to be missing. The game is played from a first-person perspective as you explore the world and solve puzzles while coming across documents journals and other forms of collectibles.
As someone who has read a compilation of Lovecraft's work, this game is very much what I would expect for the type of game that it is. Very much a Lovecraft atmosphere, which could have delved deeper into the game that it's trying to be. But really glad that it keeps to where it's meant to be. It doesn't push itself too far and much of what you do in the game is nothing new or innovative. But given this is supposed to be a Lovecraft inspired game, that's a good thing. Check it out if you are a Lovecraft fan. 8/10
