Random Video Game Review - Code Vein

Bandai Namco have always been the sort of company that like to go all out with their games. Big games and that will be the end of it. Much like with Nintendo, Sega, Square Enix and possibly even Capcom, they too have studios in the western parts of the world as well as their own in house ones in Japan. Code Vein is them trying to combine the gameplay of the harshly good Dark Souls games with the animation of the God Eater games. Both franchises of which Bandai Namco publish with one being made in the western parts of the world and the other in Japan. Looks like an interesting game and one that I bought during the summer Steam sale. So let's take a look:

Set in the near future, the world has faced an event called the Great Collapse. Monsters begin to emerge around the world, which prompts humanity to use various means to create the Revenants; human corpses bought back to life with implants and vampire like abilities. They can only die if their hearts are destroyed and require human blood to avoid becoming those monsters themselves. You play as the silent but customizable protagonist who awakens in a city known only as Vein. The character joins up with a group of beings that are working to remedy a thing known as Blood Bead scarcity, and you basically spend much of the game, exploring the world to find those Bloodsprings which you have the power to bring back to life and other things too. As mentioned, this game has Dark Souls gameplay in which there are a lot of enemies to fight, but the majority of which are much less harsh than any in those games (well except for a few bosses). You also have a skill tree, be able to change your position from say a fighter to a ranger. And using the hub, you can buy and upgrade weapons, regain any blood veins you have lost and continue to customize your character (because if I'm being honest, those of us on PC would want to mod games like this to death).

While this game has nothing to really cry out about in terms of gameplay and innovation, it has its charm, its likeable characters and when not being harsh, it can be quite fun to play. It's also presented reasonably well with its visuals matching that of the God Eater games and very much looks like an anime come to life in a video game. 9/10
