You've all heard the song by now. Now we have a film about a guy trying to live out the perfect days that he can. The film has had an interesting time recently in that it was nominated for an award at the latest (at the time of writing this) Academy Awards and the first Japanese one to do so. A slice of life kind of film and one that fits well in the sort of art house genre which I continue to explore in between the big releases. Perfection is a hard thing to come by and even in films like this where the dialogue is minimal and all that, it can be a difficult thing to achieve. We all have our takes on what perfection is and even with a film like this, it's not going to win everyone over. Regardless, you don't need a lot of things to make a film good. You don't need action, complex explanations, big massive battles and all that to make a good film. Something as small, like this, can make a good film and ok sure, maybe it would've been better seen on a streaming service. But I do appreciate the efforts made into making sure these smaller, lesser known films, get the attention they desire. Let's take a look:
It's one of those films where I can't really give away too much. All you need to know is that it's about a toilet cleaner (played by Koji Yakusho) who has his routine and goes about life, living out the perfect days that he can. Meeting various people and doing some not too unusual things along the way. And yes, he does listen to a few popular songs including a certain Lou Reed one.
One of the big messages I found in this film is that you don't need all these complex narratives to make a good film. Sometimes the best kinds of films are the ones that have some, but not much dialogue, and we just see a guy go about his weekly routine. Just to give us an idea of a perfect kind of life that hardly has any stress to it. It's not going to be for everyone, but to me, it does feel as close to perfection in a film as it can. The acting from the main person is good and the people he meets, offer him new perspectives of life as well as a bit of humour (unintentionally or otherwise). So yeah, if you just want a very peaceful and quiet film without too much going on, check this one out. 9/10
