Movie Review: Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (Cinema)

OK so I lied when I said that inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood would be the last one that was released last year (well kinda), but I can assure you now that this will be the last one (no lies). This film (originally was to be called MI4) is what I call, a great action film with humorous moments throughout. Is it any good? Read on to find out:

SPOILERS!!!!

So the film begins with an IMF agent on his mission to recover some data of some sort. His mission fails when an undercover assassin kills him and takes the data from him. Going into the present, we see Benji (played by Simon Pegg who is seen in everything now apparently) planning a rescue mission to free Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise as always) from a prison in Moscow which goes well despite Ethan wanting to save a buddy of his in the same area. Jane Carter (who was leading the rescue mission), in a van of some sort and after letting Ethan's buddy go, fills Ethan in on what's been happening (with Benji adding that he's been promoted to Field agent). Ethan then receives his mission on a telephone which self destructs when Ethan checks it again (despite it saying it shall go off in 5 seconds). Leading his team to the Kremlin, Ethan and Benji go undercover as the leader of some powerful Russian force and his associate to find information on a man called Cobalt. This mission fails when some disturbance comes into the IMF's frequency alerting the Russians about the attack, which then causes the Kremlin to explode. Ethan ends up in hospital and is told about some Russian guy who is after him for something. Ethan escapes the hospital and hitches a ride with the Secretary for IMF and his analyst William Brandt who both reveal to Ethan that IMF is dead and the US president has started Ghost Protocol. The Secretary tells Ethan that he can either hand himself over to US forces or have his team prevent a nuclear war between Russia and the US by stopping Cobalt (later to be revealed as Kurt Hendricks. a man who kills the weak for the strong to survive) from making the war happen. The Secretary is then killed which leaves Ethan and Will no choice but to meet with Benji and Carter on a train to discuss their mission. Without any IMF equipment or support, the team (with Will joining it) then head to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai to perform an exchange with Hendrick's right hand man, Wistrom for some nuclear codes. Moreau (who was the assassin that killed that agent earlier on) is planning the exchange so Ethan's team then separate to perform the exchange. Ethan and Will (using contact lenses technology similar to that of Torchwood), then perform the exchange with Moreau while Carter does Wistrom (with Benji going undercover as a french room service person). Everything seems to go according to plan until Moreau sees the lenses and then attacks the agents (with Carter then kicking her out of the window to presumably kill her). Wistrom also discovers the agents and legs it. Ethan decides to run after him (through the sandstorm) but realises that its Hendricks in disguise. Ethan then leaves the team upon realising the consequences and that Will is a Field agent, to finish the job. He then meets his buddy from earlier and his associate who works for the Russian that's after him and explains everything to him to convince him to give the location of Hendricks. The dealer (the associate by the way) tells Ethan that Hendricks will be in Mumbai and will need a code to prevent a satellite from signalling the Marine forces to fire a nuclear missile that Hendricks will use to start the war. The code of course can be acquired by Indian Telecoms entrepreneur Brij Nath. Meeting with his team, Ethan then heads to Mumbai and goes undercover with Carter to get the codes while Will and Benji try to stop Hendricks by hacking into the system itself. Carter then seduces Brij and gets the code from him. Ethan and Carter then go to the whereabouts of Hendricks and Wistrom but are too late as a missile has been launched. Ethan then goes after Hendricks to get his suitcase and deactivate the missile while the rest of his team get the system working for him to deactivate the missile. Wistrom and Hendricks are then defeated and the Russian from earlier finds Ethan and admits to him that he is now a Friend than an enemy before taking Ethan to hospital. Later on in Seattle, Ethan meets up with his team after talking to an old buddy of his and gives the team their next missions. Will refuses his mission but is then convinced by Ethan that he wasn't responsible for his wife's death and that she is still alive. Will (upon guilt) then accepts his mission while Ethan watches his wife from a distance. The film then ends with Ethan getting his next mission.

Even though, I've only watched the 3rd film before watching this one, I actually enjoyed this film. Sure there were many clichéd moments but the action is well done and the humour is great. Overall, a great action film for any fan of the MI series and action film fans overall. 9/10
