After 6 years of Assassin's Creed madness, the story of Desmond Miles, who has been the series main protagonist, finally closes. With a lot of supporting material and a massive fanbase, is the series still great after all this time? Let's find out:
I
So taking place in the present, Desmond Miles, a bartender from New York, is abducted by an organization called Abstergo (who are the modern Templars) in an attempt to find an artifact called The Apple of Eden. There he meets 2 employees of Abstergo called Dr Warren Vidic and his assistant, Lucy Stillman. They put him into a machine called the Animus which can be used to relive one's ancestors. Desmond begins to relive the life of an assassin in the Third Crusade era called Altair, a master assassin who shows a lot of arogance to his work. After failing the 3 tenets of the creed (Don't use the hidden blade on the inocent, hide in plain sight and never compromise the brotherhood) during a mission to aquire the Apple, Altair is stripped of his assassin ranks by his mentor and master assassin, Al Mualim, who then asks Altiar to prove himself worthy of the ranks by killing nine men who are part of a group of Templars and in return, Altair will be given a new weapon each time. So for the most part, you basically travel to different areas in and around Masyaf and in those areas, you have to investigate on the Templar that you're after and then prepare for killing you're target. In addition to this, there are many ways to do your investigation, whether it be evesdropping, beating out a guy for information, or just pickpocketing people for information. Overall, the game is ok, it's very repetitive and also quite short. It's an ok game for anyone who wants to pass the time with something, but otherwise, you could probably miss it (unless you want the whole story). 7/10
II
Serving as the sequel to the previous game, Desmond and Lucy escape Abstergo with information on another one of Desmond's ancestors, Ezio. They then head for a hideout of some kind and Lucy reveals to Desmond that her team of assassins are also needing to find the location of various artifacts across the world, before Abstergo gets to it first. Lucy then introduces Desmond to her team, historian Shaun Hastings and computer expert Rebecca Crane, before putting him into thier own version of the Animus dubbed Animus 2.0, so that he can relive the memories of his ancestor in the Italian Renaissance, Ezio. Ezio is an italian ladies man, who loves to be adventurous. But after failing to prevent the death of his father and brothers, he is forced to learn the ways of being an assassin. He finds the prosecutor, but he reveals to him that he was under orders to do so (with the revelation of Ezio's father being an assassin). Ezio and his mother and sister, flee from thier hometown of Florence to seek residence in his uncle Mario's villa. Mario reveals to him that he is the master assassin for Italy and then shows the ways of being an assassin to Ezio, so that he can avenge his father and brothers. In addition to a much longer and stronger story than before, there is a lot of things to do in addition to the main story. This includes decoding glyphs in the area, finding feathers and flags, maintaining the villa, travelling into secret temples to find treasure and other stuff and using new ways to kill your targets. It's better than the first as it has more structure to the story and you can actually do more than investigation and killing targets. The graphics have improved welll and it's overall a much better experience than before. 9/10
Brotherhood
Serving as a direct sequel to the last game, Ezio returns to the villa after finding out information from a member of the "First Civilization". He is greeted by the other assassins, but after revealing that he didn't kill the Master Templar, some of them weren't too happy. While Ezio thought his assassin days are over, that is short lived when some Templars, invade and attack the villa. They take the Apple and kill Mario in the process. This then has Ezio and the other assassins relocate in Rome which is the base of all Templar operations in Italy. Back in the present (2012 to be exact), Desmond and co. relocate themselves inside the Auditore Villa to prevent themselves from being captured by Abstergo. With their goal being to aquire the apple in thier minds (to prevent an apocolyptic event that happens, that very same year), Desmond continues to relive the memories of Ezio, in the event to find the location of the apple. The game has everything from the last game, but for the most part, you'll only be able to go around Rome and (temporally) the Auditore Villa and its surroundings. To make up for this, you can now raid a Borgia tower to have it under assassin control, recruit other assassins and train them by helping you out and sending them on various missions, and probably the game's biggest feature, an online multiplayer mode which you can use to practice your skills as an assassin. During the story, Desmond at any point can leave the Animus to either talk to people, check emails, make fun of Altair in front of his statue and explore the Villa and it's surroundings before sunlight. Overall, it has a lot of things that fans have been wanting for a while, which is great, and recruiting assassins is possibly the best thing to come out of the series, as well as raiding towers. 9/10
Revelations
Click here to see my review of this game (I should probably mention that while I thought that this was a great game at the time, it isn't the best game of the series, now that I've thought about it).
III
Following the events of the last game, Desmond and Co (his father replaces Lucy due to fatal reasons) arrive at the secrect temple that is supposed to have the power to save the world from it's apocolypse. However in order to access this power, Desmond must find power sources and the key, so he goes into the Animus to relive one last ancestor. This time from the American Revolution era. He first relives the memories of Haythem Kenway and then his son, Conner (and I know he has another name because of him being half native american and I'm not even going to spell it so there). This game is by far the biggest as it has nearly every single gameplay element from the previous games, but those elements aren't used as much in the main story and are used differently too. In addition to those, you can also hunt wild animals using various weapons and tatics to do so, analyze clues during an investigation, make your own personal community in your Homestead and possibly the biggest and most exciting of them all, battling eniemes in vast numbers as well as ship battles too. Unlike the last 3 games, I feel that Conner's story is told and finished this game, but then again, I could be wrong. Also Desmond's playability is better as he can fufil some missions in the present as well as leaving the animus to check emails, talk to people, find the power source places, find out more about the first civilization and explore the temple. This is by far the best in the series as it is long and is very fun to play, and it ends Desmond's story on a satisfactory note. a perfect 10/10
So overall, the series has been great. It's educated us in a way that makes it better than school and it can be played for a very long time and I can't wait to see what's next for the franchise. 9/10
